Anaconda Officials Meet Chile Unions to Head Off Strike
Anaconda Copper mine officials in Chuquicamata met with union leaders in Santiago to avert a strike set for midnight Sunday over wage demands. The union's vote on ratification showed 29 to 9 in favor of settling with Anaconda, while a separate ballot with American Smelting and Refining Co. passed 54 to 34. Butte Miners Union Local 1 later voted 880 to 292 to ratify with their company.

Second F1111A crash adds to Vietnam losses
The Air Force reports the second of six F1111A jets lost in Vietnam entered service less than a week ago. Two crewmen were rescued after the Saturday crash in Thailand due to an operational failure, not enemy fire. In the Khe Sanh region Marines report 130 North Vietnamese killed in two trench fights near the base, with 9 Marines dead and 74 wounded. Near Gio Linh Vietnamese infantry with U.S. Marine support slain 132 enemy, while Allied casualties include 15 South Vietnamese and 5 Americans. The first F111 vanished Thursday. U.S. officials say both crew and aircraft are missing. The aircraft had begun combat over North Vietnam last Monday from Ta Khu air base.

Montana Mental Health Association elects new leadership

Three youths killed as car hits bridge
Three Montana youths Stephan Black Floyd Sparman and Kevin Schilke all 16 or 17 from Hamilton died when a northbound car struck a concrete bridge abutment on U S 93 ten miles south of Hamilton and burst into flames. The Hamilton fire department extinguished the blaze and removed the bodies from the wreck. Ravalli County's death toll rose to five for the year, three fewer than in all of 1967. Montana's highway deaths reached 34, matching the 1967 toll at this date.

Science Fair Winners From Butte And Anaconda Honored
Peggy Plett of Butte High School and Ron Fischer of Anaconda High School won grand prizes as best girl and best boy exhibits at the Dist 3 State Regional Science Fair. They earned expense paid trips to the 19th International Science Fair in Detroit May 15 18. Plett’s project shows cobalt 60 radiation causes mutations and Fischer’s demonstrates bacteria produce electricity. Each will receive 100 dollars in district funds with the rest covered by their schools.
