The New York Times reports a 26 union coalition reached basic copper sector settlements with Phelps Dodge and Kennecott, wrapping terms for 39 to 42 month contracts. Some details withheld, but wage and benefit costs could total 8 to 9 percent annually, above desired levels.
Union panel vote tonight follows a Washington statement from Anaconda vice president William M. Kirkpatrick. He says tentative agreements with unions cover Montana Nevada Arizona and New Jersey while negotiations continue on brass and wire cable operations in several states. Details await ratification and further notices.

Panama’s National Assembly convicted President Marco A Robles of illegal political activity and suspended him. Vice President Max Delvalle was sworn in as president as National Guard troops patrolled the area and demonstrators gathered outside. The vote left two claimants to the presidency Delvalle and Robles with the Supreme Court due to rule on the crisis.
An Aer Lingus passenger plane carrying 61 people plunged into the Irish Sea after going into a spin off the Welsh coast. Heavy rain and darkness hampered a large rescue by navy ships and aircraft. Airline deputy manager Arthur Walls expressed deep regret and said survivors were unlikely. Walls’ brother was on board.
The Montana Tech Boosters Club reports 63 Century Club members at 100 each totalling 6300 and 350 additional members at 10 each, funding athletic and academic scholarships. Club president Bob Boulter notes 10000 secured so far toward a goal of larger support by 1974, with no member compensation and admin costs limited to essential expenses. A list of Century Club members includes All State Insurance The Anaconda Co and Gov Tim J Babcock among others.
After 254 days the Anaconda Company and unions reach a tentative settlement in Washington D C and Montanans await ratification. The walkout began July 15 with strikes at Anaconda and seven other nonferrous firms. If ratified, this ends a historic labor clash tied to the copper industry.
In Billings the Selvidge Babcock Building was hit in a mass burglary late Saturday or early Sunday. The theater and six stores were robbed including Barons Jewelry Fanny Farmers Candy Jason Clothing Barnett Optical Big Sky Corral and Doyle fashion store. A safe from the theater office was pried loose and moved to the mezzanine before an attempt failed. The burglars accessed the basement by opening a theater door or by breaking a wall hole to reach other entrances.
Three area schools list top spellers for the Treasure State Spelling Bee held at Anaconda High School Little Theater. From Anaconda Junior High 220 seventh graders yield Roy Gates Duane McNeil Sam Freese and Christine Orrino as top. 185 eighth graders include Mary Helen Duffy Terri Gilliland and Debbie Davis. St Paul School winners include Barry Beardslee Bill Earhart Nancy Gallagher Shawn Devine and Cecilia Dudis. St Patrick School winners are Lynn Butcher and Ron Hendrickson.
Duncan Ray Campbell Sr. 85 died Sunday in a local hospital. A retired Montana Power Co. employee, he was known as Dunc and remembered as a golfer and mid 1920s bowler. He played for Butte Brewery and had a long career with Montana Power before retiring in 1949. He is survived by sons and daughters in several states and nine grandchildren. Last rites Wednesday at Richards Funeral Home. Buried Mount Moriah Cemetery. Memorials to the American Cancer Society.
