Senator Robert F. Kennedy declared in flight to California that he will remain a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination regardless of President Johnsons Vietnam moves. He termed Westmoreland a brave general and said his reservation is with the policy in Vietnam. Kennedy spoke at an airborne press conference during a San Francisco stop ahead of rallies in Stockton Sacramento and San Jose.
Montana Board of Health ordered Rocky Mountain Phosphates Co to close its Garrison kiln for violating a pollution reduction pledge. Officers cited fluoride levels above contract limits after air and grass tests. Company president Bryce Rhodes said shutdown began a week ago and will not reopen without board approval. The state notes the contract took effect after a temporary air-clean system. Earlier, the Montana Supreme Court upheld a $123,000 damages verdict against the firm for fluoride injuries to local ranchers.
AP report states a US high altitude reconnaissance aircraft was shot down Friday afternoon over the South China mainland. The incident was reported by Peking's New China News Agency in Beijing.
Lewis and Clark County Attorney Thomas J. Hanrahan 37 announced he will seek the Democratic nomination for attorney general. A former assistant, he spoke in 31 Montana cities about crime here and nationally. Hanrahan chairs the Montana Bar Association crime committee and leads the Montana County Attorneys Association.
A New York Times survey of Democratic leaders in all 50 states suggests President Johnson could win more than 65 percent of votes at the national convention, easily defeating Kennedy and McCarthy. It estimates Johnson with 1725 convention votes to 790 for Kennedy and McCarthy combined.
In Silver City, AFL CIO United Steelworkers of America Local and Kennecott Copper Corp China Mines Division announced a local settlement amid a long copper strike. Merino said approval by other Kennecott locals is pending before companywide ratification meetings.
Republican governors abandon efforts to back Nixon for president. Gov. John H. Chafee says they will convene regional hearings from May 7 in Seattle Albuquerque Little Rock Detroit and possibly Boston to shape progressive planks for the party platform. Rockefeller not expected to seek a new draft.

The Committee for Better Education led by Charles Davis urges a April 6 election on two special mill levies totaling about 1942 mills to raise $759,138 for elementary and high schools and a $1,196,000 bond with $824,000 for a new elementary school east of Continental Drive between Silver Bow General Hospital and its annex. A land exchange with Silver Bow County may move Cleveland School site. Davis calls passage vital to school efficiency next term.
Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr., former Kennedy aide, flatly contests Gen. William C. Westmoreland’s promotion, saying it amounts to a recall and questions his competence after Vietnam service. He urged that Westmoreland’s record suggests he cannot handle a bigger role.
A year after Danette Neary disappeared after a 2 a.m. drop near her Walkerville home, investigators say the account of the young man who drove her home cannot be disproved. Neary, age 20, known as McGuff, may have left to start a new life or fallen victim, while officials note many missing girl cases end with a return home, though time has worn down any hopeful conclusions.
