Four unions in the Butte Anaconda area planned ballots on a tentative agreement to end the nine month strike against Anaconda Co. Local 375 Butte Operating Engineers and Local 88 Machinists plus Ironworkers Local 81, and Local 65 IBEW scheduled meetings or secret ballots. United Steelworkers Local 6002 and Butte Teamsters Local 2 awaited final draft. No date for return to work set.

Allied sweep near Saigon kills 243 Viet Cong in action
American and South Vietnamese infantry in the Saigon area pressed the largest allied offensive of the war. They reported 243 Viet Cong killed as U S and South Vietnamese troops reinforced outposts after a dawn attack. The swing wing FIA flew its first combat mission in North Vietnam. Far south in the Mekong Delta, U S air power hit the Cong water supply line, mashing 245 sampans. Casualty figures were not fully disclosed. The operation began March 11 with 50 000 American and South Vietnamese troops aiming to wrest initiative from the Viet Cong and shield Saigon. The Viet Cong total reported slain rose to 1 555. U S losses stood at 57 killed, 457 wounded, with South Vietnamese losses at 71 killed, 192 wounded. Two Americans were killed and 16 wounded in an engagement near Hue.

Montana law enforcement will receive a new terminal hookup to the National Crime Information Center by May 30. Atty. General Forrest H. Anderson said the remote equipment will arrive in Billings by May 17 and be housed at the Billings Police Department. Union panel approves AS&R strike settlement
A 28 member committee of the United Steelworkers of America ratified a three area AS&R settlement covering copper lead and zinc and federated metals. Wage gains run 55 cents an hour in copper 45 cents in lead zinc 40 cents in federated metals with pensions included. Ratification by other unions and local issues remain, but operations could resume as soon as Friday.

Dillon Marine Survives Viet Cong Wounding Near Da Nang
Dillon Marine Lance Corporal Daniel Sanders 20, son of Mrs Edna Sanders, was wounded five times while aiding a fellow soldier near Da Nang Vietnam. Flown to Fitzsimmons General Hospital Denver for treatment, his condition reported satisfactory. Doctors expect skin grafts to his side and leg, requiring extended hospital stay.

Teenage smoking declines in nationwide health survey
U S Public Health Service reports 10 percent fewer teenage smokers over a decade and 80 percent of current teen smokers want to quit.
