Butte trustees unanimously approve a 7,373,038 budget for the coming year. The elementary budget rises to 5,139,438 and the high school to 2,233,600 as the district plans for 855 new students from closed parochial schools.
Frank Joseph Sever 56 of 725 13th died at a local hospital after a one car crash at 6 40 p m on Interstate 90 west of Butte. He was an Ironworker with the Anaconda Co. and survived by widow Esther. The death raised Montana highway toll to 140 with Silver Bow County reporting seven fatalities in 1969.
A White Sulphur Springs priest Rev. Neil David Chisholm 45 of Butte and Patricia Marie Rouse 20 of Opportunity were killed in a two car collision north of Wilsall on U S 89 Sunday night. Michael L Johnston 24 of White Sulphur Springs was seriously injured and remained in Livingston Memorial Hospital. The crash occurred as both cars crowded the center line near a narrow bridge. An inquest is pending Johnston's recovery. Father Chisholm born May 12 1924 was ordained in 1954 and previously served in Conrad and Walk See COLLISION Page 2.
Silver Bow County welfare director Josephine MacArthur and Assistant Queenie Lynch explain the Supreme Court decision affects only certain federal aid categories and does not drop residence requirements for general assistance or medical care. They note rules for one year local residence and cross county moves determine where aid is paid and that Montana towns continue to handle eligibility.
A Long Island Railroad train backed into another at Pennsylvania Station injuring 75 during evening rush hour. Service from Manhattan was disrupted as derailed cars ripped tracks and riders, including a nun with an eye injury, were treated. An additional Queens short circuit halted another LIRR train.
A four engine DC4 cargo plane trying to return to Miami International Airport crashed into a busy four block street. Ten people were killed and a dozen injured as the plane demolished a body shop and buildings, ignited gasoline, and toppled utility poles. Fire crews and police aided victims as witnesses described a devastating mid fence catastrophe near 36th Street.
Secretary Laird testified before the Senate Foreign Relations committee and refined his earlier assertion that the Soviet Union seeks a first strike capability. He said the Soviets may be developing a first strike weapon with the SS 9 missile aimed at a portion of the U S retaliatory force, the Minuteman missiles.
Rain persists into midweek with temperatures around 60 today and a low near 42. The forecast notes unsettled conditions and a damp pattern extending through Tuesday.
Pope Paul VI marked six years on the throne by warning of two core problems facing Catholicism a diminished doctrinal fidelity to the deposit of faith and a diffuse lack of confidence in the Pope cardinals and bishops. He lamented distrust in hierarchical authority and said criticisms are heard with humility and objectivity as reforms are debated.
Roger Rouse a 33 year old light heavyweight from Opportunity Montana faces one felony and two misdemeanor charges after an altercation with officers in uptown Butte. His brother Donald 36 also of Opportunity faces one felony and one misdemeanor. Police say they assaulted officers and resisted arrest while fighting each other in an alley. They were released on bonds of 2000 each and scheduled to appear before Justice of the Peace Georgia Moran with attorney Wade J Dahood of Anaconda. They had not appeared by Monday afternoon.
