Judy Garland died in London at age 47 after a sudden death. Scotland Yard ruled out suicide with a postmortem pending. Garland had settled in Chelsea with her husband Mickey Deans, and her children were notified. Deans, 35, left the house with friends as investigators began.

Tornado devastates Salina area with widespread damage

Severe storms and a tornado struck Salina Kansas and nearby areas injuring about 60 people, damaging more than 25 homes and wiping out a hangar with 15 airplanes. A transmission tower and 100 utility poles fell, while Ellsworth county Kanapolis Reservoir and other central Kansas sites suffered further destruction.
