Federal building work gets congressional help
Senate and House Public Works committees approved an amendment raising the cost limit for Butte’s remodeling of the post office and courthouse from 707000 to 850000. The low bid of 709360 by Taylor McDonnell Construction Co. was acceptable, with no rebid. GSA will confer on the project this week. The plan uses basement and second floor space for offices and includes ventilation upgrades elevator installation and lighting changes.

Three Firms Destroyed In Butte Fire On Main Street
A severe winter fire in downtown Butte destroyed Heidelberg Inn Al's Photo Show and the Board of Trade, three vacant stores suffered little damage, and smoke affected Roberts Jewelry and several other small shops. Estimated loss from two hundred thousand to two hundred fifty thousand dollars with about 30 tenants rescued. Firefighters battled flames for hours and return suppression at the Heidelberg. Local officials handled the scene as Deputy State Fire Marshal Ron Brown observed.

Butte Sailor Dies in Vietnam Drowning Incident
Kenneth P. West 24 of Butte drowned Sunday in Vietnam at Nha Be after stepping between pontoons and being swept under by current. A Navy radarman second class, he joined in 1963 after graduating Butte High. He is survived by parents Amos K. and Mrs. West, a sister May Jane, brothers Peter Tim othy and Edward, and grandmother Mrs. Peter Thompson.
