Blackfeet Indian Becomes Priest in Montana

In St Ignatius Montana a Blackfeet Indian, 32, Rev John J Brown, was ordained the tribe’s first Roman Catholic priest before 700 witnesses. Bishop Joseph M Gilmore presided, with Bishop William Condon participating. Brown’s work includes teaching among Idaho Coeur d Alene Indians and he will celebrate his first mass at St Anne’s Church Heart Butte.

GREAT FALLS June 16 Mrs Mattie E Dawson of Stevensville was elected president of the Rebekah assembly at the annual meeting here. She succeeds Mrs Ida M Hines of Bozeman. The five day session began Sunday and ends Thursday with grand lodge officer elections. Other officers elected include Mrs Ethel Krogness Glendive vice president Mrs Martha Malemo Butte warden Mrs Mayme Henderson Missoula secretary and Mrs Mabel Flaten Havre treasurer.

Plans to Reduce Disease in State

Helena June 16 Director Abraham Wallach of the Montana industrial hygiene division said a comprehensive program has been planned to reduce occupational disease in the state. The plan was approved by the state industrial hygiene advisory board including James Graham Dennis McCarthy Carl Trauerman A B Richardson and Dr B K Kilbourne. The division will combine engineering studies with medical studies of exposed workers with the medical portion voluntary and confidential.

Third Auto Accident Victim Succumbs

Browning drama reports June 16 Dave Schnee Cut Bank rancher died Wednesday morning in Blackfeet Indian agency hospital the third to die from a two car collision Sunday. Killed were Clifford Robertson 24 and Paul Home Gun 24 both Blackfoot four miles west of Browning on U S highway 2. John Yellow Kidney Browning remained hospitalized. Schnee was the driver of one vehicle.

Aluminum strike ordered at Aluminum Company of America

The CIO United Steelworkers ordered a strike at Aluminum Company of America starting Sunday midnight after negotiations failed over a 10 cent hourly wage increase. About 20,000 workers in nine plants across nine states will be affected.

QUIT COMPANY NEW YORK June 16 George Whitney president of J P Morgan company and H P Davison a vice president resigned as directors of Montgomery Ward and company second largest mail order house in the country. House Uses Axe on Draft Bill

The House approved cutting the draft term by half in a 156 to 88 vote amid debate on the two year formative period concern. Coudert and Smathers urged a longer service while Ly warned the amendment would render the bill pointless. Mansfield announced plans to push further action on Wednesday.
