Helena June 15 The state board of health said Tuesday that Montana records the first case of Rocky Mountain spotted fever in 1948. The report marks a significant early warning of the disease in the state.
Doris Enelovo of Stevensville was elected grand worthy adviser of the Rainbow for girls at the three day twentieth annual convention closing in Missoula. She succeeds Dolores Knutson of Malta. Other grand officers and appointive officers were announced, with names and home towns for each. The note ends with an unrelated line about the Duke of Wellington and Napoleon at Waterloo.
Treasure State News reports several United Spanish War Veterans affiliates in Helena elected officers Tuesday and scheduled their 1949 convention in Lewistown. Associate Justice A H Angstman of the Montana Supreme Court left for St Paul to deliver the commencement address to graduates of the St Paul College of Law Angstman was a 1912 graduate of that college He will then travel to Philadelphia for the Republican national convention
Costumed Indians will watch a fellow Blackfeet become the tribe's first Roman Catholic priest here Wednesday. The Rev. John J. Brown, a native Montanan, will be ordained by Bishop Joseph M. Gilmore of Helena at historic St. Ignatius mission. The event marks spiritual growth of the Indian nation and echoes Father DeSmet's mission. HELENA June 15. The State Aeronautics commission Tuesday elected H. L. Cummings Billings chairman and named Nels Briggs of Glasgow vice chairman, succeeding Cummings. W. G. Ferguson of Helena was re elected secretary. Cummings, an airlines representative, succeeds Dr. Herbert Hayward of Hamilton as chairman.
Helena June 15 Protests of endurance horse races in general and the Hell Creek to Miles City race in particular reached Gov Sam C Ford as the Office reported He has received several telegrams and letters on the subject Secretary Walter Coombs said One telegram came from Robert Sellar president of the American Humane Association Ford said he has no control over the matter and the protest continues to be studied by officials.
In Bozeman on Monday William W. Wittman Jr. 17 died after a tractor accident when a pitchfork pierced his brain at his father's farm. A search was underway in Glendive for 10 year old Duane Gustafson who drowned Sunday near a Yellowstone River inlet. Also noted is commentary on California grape production highlighting Zinfandel as the most planted and productive variety.
All employes of school district No 1 except teachers may vote in a special election to decide participation in the Montana old age retirement pension plan. Election Thursday 8 30 to 4 30 in the School Administration building.
Nine contestants from six northwestern states and three Canadian provinces arrive in Butte for the sectional Knights of Pythias public speaking contest at the Montana Power auditorium tonight. The winner advances to the national finals in Milwaukee on August 11 for a $1,000 college scholarship. Deer Lodge’s Louis Jo. Klefer Jr. represents Montana, with piano solos by Butte’s Robert Best. Admission is free.
A 14 piece Elks band directed by Pete Malyevac performed a 45 minute program of waltzes matches and popular airs to an enthusiastic A C M club audience in the Crystal room Tuesday night. The performance drew many encore calls and strong applause from club members. Sarah Bernhardt earned about 9 000 000 during her international stage career.
John R Hamilton a 32 year old railroad conductor died suddenly Tuesday night in Deer Lodge He was born in Three Forks and lived in Deer Lodge ten years He is survived by his wife Donna a son John of Deer Lodge his mother Mrs John Hamilton Sr of Three Forks and two brothers Walter of Three Forks and Robert of Portland The BPOE Moose Lodge and Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen are noted among his affiliations The body rests at Ress funeral home.
The Business and Professional Women's club will not meet Wednesday evening as planned but will convene Friday at 7 PM. Officers will be installed and reports shared on the state convention.

Peggy Towle Prescott Towle visit, Leo Evans family from Kansas City stay with Clara Evans, plane trip six hours. James B Lortz and wife relocate from Great Falls, Lortz buys Tomlinson store. Tomlinson ranch nearby Deer Lodge.
In Winnemucca Nevada police report two dead after a murder suicide. Mrs. D W Ripley 41 of Winne mucca died from a heart wound in an Eggleston Court bungalow. Robie Miles 45 of Kalispell Montana died from an apparently self inflicted chest wound moments later. Ripley had previously married Miles in Montana.
In Minneapolis on June 15 a 59 year old Montanan filed a $100,000 personal injury suit in federal court against Northern Pacific Railroad. Martin Rehtarsek claimed permanent disability and loss of his left arm after a switch engine ran over him March 30 at the Butte rail yards where he labored. In a separate item from Crete Greece, U S warships increased in Greek waters with ten more vessels at Suda Bay and Philadelphia Sea among those aimed to return to America, per a naval attaché.
Preliminary plans for Butte’s annual Fourth of July celebration were outlined at a Tuesday night meeting in city chambers. The three day program includes a July 3 children’s fish derby a July 4 sports program a July 5 grand parade and a Big Butte fireworks finale. William Griffiths was named fireworks chairman Evan Tippett vice chairman Mary McDonald secretary treasurer and other leaders were appointed to finance sports fish derby parade music and floats.
West coast maritime unions on June 15 announced a new strike date of June 24 at 10 30 a m. The move follows a Monday injunction due to expire and urges intensified mobilization while noting members retain rights to quit for safety or other legitimate reasons. The notice references the Jewish calendar year 5708.
