Mansfield urges tax cuts tied to spending trims and reform

Montana Senator Mike Mansfield, Senate majority leader, told Butte listeners that any extension of the Nixon surtax should be paired with spending cuts of about five billion dollars next year and a ten billion dollar Nixon budget reduction. He urged broader tax reform, higher exemptions, closing loopholes, and proposed taxing foundations, while backing continued European force reductions and a phased Vietnam drawdown.

Washington group promotes Alaska highway hearings in Butte

A 23 man delegation led by Rep. John C. Kluczynski arrives in Butte for a Monday hearing on completing paving of the Alaska highway. The series covers Great Falls and Fairbanks with tests, meals, and tests, inviting public testimony.

Senator pleased Alaska highway hearings begin

Mike Mansfield the Senate majority leader said hearings will be held in Montana on the all weather highway to Alaska proposal. He and Sen. Lee Metcalf have co sponsored a bill to establish the route through Alberta and the tip of British Columbia. The hearings were set for Butte and Great Falls this week on a House bill.

8000 Army troops to come home from Vietnam

The Pentagon announced 8000 Army personnel will return to the continental United States and have units inactivated or demobilized. About 25,000 total across Army Marine and Navy are to withdraw by August, with 4000 from the 9th Infantry Division brigade and 4000 in nondivisional Army units.

Campers Fight Boat Thieves In Night Lake Assault

A camping couple at Philipsburg Bay near Georgetown Lake fought off two young thieves who attacked James P. Drain and injured him. His wife Mrs Drain fired on the departing truck with a .22 rifle. Drain was taken to Community Hospital in Anaconda for a scalp wound and loss of blood. The suspects fled in an old truck. deputies hunted the vehicle while prompting area hospitals to be alert.
