Marines to lose third of strength as DMZ front scales back

Maj. Gen. William K. Jones announces the 3rd Marine Division will shed about 7,000 men next month as the 9th Regiment departs Vietnam under orders to phase out 25,000 Americans in July and August. He says the remaining Marines can keep the enemy on the run despite North Vietnamese forces across the DMZ and notes progress in pacification and Vietnamese Army integration.

Pompidou Wins French Presidency Defeating Poher At 57.8 Percent

Butte Native Named New Carroll College President

Father Joseph D. Harrington, a Butte native and longtime Carroll College leader, was named the ninth president. He will take office July 1, succeeding Msgr. Anthony Brown, now administrative vice president at St. Thomas College. Harrington joined Carroll in 1960 as a biology professor and served four years as dean of studies.

Treasury chief urges extension of 10 percent surtax

Treasury Secretary David M. Kennedy urged Congress to extend the 10 percent income tax surcharge noting record employment and income. He rejected a four month compromise and said Nixon tied tax exemptions for two million poor people to the bill, making defeat unlikely. Kennedy spoke on Face the Nation and warned against betting on banks raising the prime rate again. Senator Sparkman criticized the latest rate rise as dangerous and warned wage price controls might be needed if rates stay high. Kennedy denied opposition from Rep. Wright. See EXTENSION Page 6

Alaska highway hearings open in Finlen Hotel today

A public hearing on paving the Alaska highway opens at the Finlen Hotel at 10 AM with sessions 2 to 5 PM. Butte Man Dies After Auto Pedestrian Crash

Jacob Bazler 74 of 15 W Copper Street died from injuries after being struck by Raymond Parker 26 of 2218 Willow as he crossed Arizona Street near Park Thursday. Coroner Leo Jacobsen said seven head injuries and limited visibility in spring snow were factors. Autopsy to confirm exact cause.
