Mansfield warns ABM in Montana would invite attack
Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield of Montana warned in Great Falls that deploying a proposed Safe guard anti ballistic missile system in Montana would make the state a prime target for Russia. Helena plant shut down after fire at Smelting plant
Fire damaged the 400 foot smoke stack at the American Smelting and Refining plant in East Helena. Plant manager Stan Lane said the shutdown will last two to three weeks with vacations arranged for most workers and the rest assigned to maintenance. About 190 people are employed at the plant.

150 Evans survivors to fly home from Philippines
About 150 survivors of the destroyer USS Frank E. Evans were to be flown from Subic Bay in the Philippines to the United States. The Evans was cut in half in a collision with the Australian carrier Melbourne last Monday in the South China Sea. Seventy four crewmen were lost and 199 survived. The group would be flown to Beach, California, the Evans home port.
