State approves 367 327 Butte vo tech budget

The Montana state board of education approved a 367327 program budget for the Butte Vo Tech Center with a brief dispute over funds for construction of vo tech centers in Billings and Great Falls. The board's total five center budgets for next year total 2 047 951 with most funds from the state.

Goldwater flies Lockheed C-5 Galaxy over Atlanta

Barry Goldwater a retired Air Force major general piloted the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy for about 15 minutes over Atlanta. He called the giant plane easy to handle and praised its performance during the briefing on military air power.

Thieu Says 25,000 U.S. Troops to Leave First

President Thieu says it was his idea to pull 25,000 U.S. troops from Vietnam and that no new troop decisions will be made until after the first contingent departs. He notes decisions will depend on South Vietnamese capabilities, Paris talks progress, and enemy activity. He and Nixon met in a peaceful mood and did not discuss elections in Vietnam.

End of Snow operation marks Sharbutt report from Saigon

AP dispatch recalls Operation Snow ending in the A Shau Valley near the Laotian border after a five week drive. U.S. command notes 977 North Vietnamese killed and 113 Americans dead or wounded. 25th Infantry and allied forces reported heavy fighting in Tay Ninh and distant assaults northwest of Saigon.

Neighborhood Youth Corps in Butte enters fifth season

The Neighborhood Youth Corps in Butte starts its fifth summer with about 150 youths, 100 boys and 50 girls, employed on city jobs. Frank Gersh directs the program locally under the Civic Action Committee with six supervisors led by Don Peoples. Funds total 62,000 via the U S Department of Labor to screen applicants through the Montana State Employment Service and certify family need.

Children Ride Free Thursdays To Columbia Gardens

On Thursdays in the summer, The Anaconda Co. and Butte Bus Lines offer free rides for children to Columbia Gardens. Two buses operate from the city center with 9:00 a.m. first departures and 4:15 p.m. last departures. return transfers are issued for outbound trips. Families picnic at the Gardens, funded by the Columbia Gardens Foundation.

Medico-legal pathologists role outlined to officers in Montana

Dr. John A. Pfaff of Great Falls told about 300 physicians that medico-legal pathologists, certified by the American Medical Association, are needed for crime detection. He described the pathologist’s critical scene role in homicide investigations and noted many doctors lack this specialty. Prof. Elison discussed revised criminal codes and procedures affecting investigations. The convention opened in Butte with a dinner and will resume Tuesday at the Montana Power auditorium.

Melbourne nearly hit another ship in near miss before Evans collision

Rear Adm. Crabb testified that a destroyer screening the Melbourne passed within 50 feet of the carrier in the early hours of May 31. He described the near collision as part of hearings into the June 3 disaster that severed the USS Evans, killing 74 sailors, with the Evans hulk towed to Subic Bay for examination. The board planned to inspect the Melbourne in Singapore after drydock repairs.

Grant Aids Economic Growth Plan For Southwestern Montana

The Economic Development Administration approved a grant of 47 900 dollars to the Inter-county Development Corporation of Southwestern Montana. The funds support continued planning for regional economic growth with the group headquartered in Anaconda and serving multiple counties including Beaverhead and Madison. An additional 17 845 dollars will also be provided for the project.
