Doctors in the midnight bulletin warn the monarch’s condition worsens with a narrowing safety margin. Officials monitor signs of improvement as new updates surface, sparking grave concerns among the public.
Court closes a nine day term with about 240 cases disposed of and moves to abatement matters. Judge Bourquin imposed thirteen jail terms yesterday including a 61 year old woman for operating a still. Mrs Kate Farlan received six months despite pleas. prior suspensions were revoked and a $100 fine imposed. Four Chinese defendants got one day plus $50 fines for smuggling opium.
Fargo North Dakota December 27 AP reports the Northwest Agricultural Foundation organized to unite farmers across Minnesota North and South Dakota and Montana. A tariff committee will push for protection including a standard of living and cost of production. The group aims to present a unified front on spring wheat legislation and tariff matters before Congress in January.

Laura Frazer known to Mark Twain as Becky Thatcher who inspired the fictional character died at 91 in Hannibal Missouri on a hill overlooking the Mississippi River. The longtime friend and schoolmate of Samuel Clemens reportedly knew more of the author’s early life than his characters. The obituary notes her lifelong link to Twain and her role as his childhood sweetheart.
The Butte district board appropriated 1000 dollars to cut student failures after high school principal Pye G. Ragsdale requested funds. He noted about 10 percent of enrollment fails, and proposed a six weeks promotion class to target early-year dropouts, with staff and trustees approving the measure.

Butte High School plans a cafeteria in the gym supplying wholesome meals at cost to about 450 students. A four to two board vote approved the plan amid labor and cost debates. Principal Ragsdale noted no rent or light bills and that $6,000 of capital would come from dormant funds. Trustee Boyle supported the plan as beneficial to students.
Principal Jesse J. Ragsdale announced that Butte High School will enroll a record number of students for the January start of the 1928-29 term, with slightly over 1,600 on hand. He noted this would surpass the previous high of 1,581 set last year.
Bolivian forces have occupied Fort Valadía and advanced 12 miles into Paraguay’s interior, according to a Paraguayan government advisory from its legation in Washington. Dr Juan V. Ramirez, chargé d affaires, released the report noting it substantiates Paraguay’s claim that Bolivia ignores established rights at Fort Vanguardia.
Police and railway detectives searched for wreckers who ditched the Missionary, an Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe train, 35 miles north of San Bernardino California. Three passengers were seriously injured and several others lightly hurt. A $1000 reward was offered for the culprits.

Little Falls Minnesota December 21 three hours after receiving a shotgun as a belated Christmas present fourteen year old Fred Irvin son of Joseph Irvin of Minneapolis was killed in an accidental shooting. Irvin and a companion had just returned from a hunting trip and were examining the gun when it discharged.
Four people die from illuminating gas poisoning in Minneapolis. Mr and Mrs Hilding Borg and their two year old daughter Joyce found dead in bed after gas odors traced to the kitchen stove. Coroner says homicide and death by own action, suggesting Mrs Borg opened the gas. The fourth victim is Margaret E Felt, 72, found dead at home with a stove gas jet partly opened, indicated as accidental death.
The 1927 national death rate was 11.4 per 1000. Idaho posted the lowest rate at 7.1, while California Vermont and New Hampshire tied for the highest at 13.9. Negro death rates were higher than white in states with large black populations, Kentucky 21 and Arkansas 12.8 noted among others.
Surgeon General Cummings said influenza situation is serious and shows every indication of spreading through the Atlantic states. He warned deaths may exceed 15 000 this year, though current cases are mild with no major complications. A second, more severe wave could come later in winter, he cautioned.
