The public health service reports 856 195 influenza cases for the week ending December 22 across 25 states and DC, an estimate based on five to one reporting. Officials warn the total likely exceeds 1,000,000 during Christmas holidays, with western reports continuing.
Butte post office adds three delivery wagons to handle remnants of the busiest Christmas rush. Belated gifts from other cities and numerous cards fill pigeon holes as hundreds of packages are delivered. Postmaster Richard Brimacombe notes pre Christmas mail volume reached several hundred thousand pieces.
The New Finlen Hotel company declared an annual dividend of 10 dollars a share for stockholders of record, up four dollars from last year, signaling local prosperity. About 2,000 people at Port Nolloth demanded open access to 34 acres of state diggings and warned of a rushed seizure if not granted by Friday. Butte school trustees expect the 10 pass cafeteria plan to open in the present month or January. In Chicago on December 26 a 22 year old Philadelphia man named Frank Orlando was killed and a police officer was seriously wounded after a pistol battle at a downtown furniture store. The pair had held up a nearby restaurant and were chased by Police Lieutenant Joseph Starshak and Policeman David Griffin.
John W. Hill, a 93 year old longtime member of Terry's Texas Rangers band, died Christmas night in Smithville Texas. He will be buried here Thursday as the Civil War era figure is laid to rest.
President and Mrs Coolidge start a Christmas respite at Howard E Coffins island retreat in a moss-draped setting near Brunswick Georgia. They arrived by train and began a planned holiday stay after detraining in Brunswick.
Two girls and a boy, children of Mrs. Anna Gromelski of Housatonic, drowned in the Housatonic River at Great Barrington when they broke through the ice while skating. The bodies were recovered.

A draft mediation protocol proposes a nine judge international conciliation panel to resolve the border clashes between Bolivia and Paraguay. Bolivia and Paraguay would each nominate two judges. the conference would appoint five neutral judges. The conciliation court would meet in Washington to organize and limit its jurisdiction to this month’s frontier clashes.

A man described as sufferer of sox phobia, Nardar Sota, a Mexican police suspect, tried to flee with about 25 pairs of socks from Murphys on East Park. He dropped 14 pairs, escaped with officers in pursuit, and was captured on East Galena. Records show this is his fifth similar arrest, with prior cases in Billings, Great Falls, and Casper, and a robbery warrant in Cut Bank.
