A three hour fire partially destroyed the White House executive offices during a children's Christmas Eve party hosted by President and Mrs. Hoover. The blaze did not reach the main White House, though the offices must be nearly rebuilt. President Hoover was present as details continued on page 2.
Mass opens services as a giant colorful spruce near the White House is illuminated. President Hoover, in Sherman Square, turns on the lights marking the national Christmas tree tradition amid photographers and cold night air.
The Christmas club movement began 19 years ago to ease holiday credit. Banks initially opposed it but support grew as it spread across the United States. In 1929 more than nine million members saved 618 million dollars, up from 550 million in 1928, across over 8,000 banks. In Butte, the city styled the greatest little democracy under the American flag, Santa Claus ruled as autocrat for an evening. From darkness until dawn, the jovial figure presided over district festivities with friends and helpers well pleased by the merriment. Senator Brookhart of Iowa denounces the Interstate Commerce Commission plan to merge the nation into 19 major railroad systems. He calls it a gigantic scheme to raise values and rates and accuses New York financiers of benefiting from the move. He favors a coast to coast consolidation and has proposed a counter bill.
Wheat futures climbed about five cents as Argentine exportable wheat is seen at roughly 58 million bushels, far below prior expectations. December closed at 1.2575, March at 1.31 plus, with May and July also advancing.
