The South Butte Kiwanis Club held a community sing and tree lighting at Main and Kaw with a 120-voice Butte high school chorus directed by Joseph Knuckey. The event revived a long standing Christmas communal carol effort with favors for children.
House Democrats push for quick approval of a 3 billion foreign aid bill with a trade amendment to back government credit for private U S sales to Soviet bloc nations. Senate schedule and potential Christmas Eve vote loom as final action remains unclear.
An ice breaker and a fishing smack rescued 18 French sailors from two lifeboats as the 2350 ton freighter Douala sank 35 miles southeast of Burgeo Newfoundland. Three bodies were recovered and seven men remained missing after the disaster. Survivors were rescued by the Ludwig and the Sir Humphrey Gilbert.
West Berliners poured through temporary gaps in the Wall for one day reunions with relatives in the East. ADN reported 31 000 West Berliners crossed Sunday with 34 000 total trips so far as permits rose to 358 000 across four days amid long lines and bitter cold.
Silver Bow County Montana will host the Democratic Congressional Report Dinner on January 4 at the Finlen Hotel in Butte. Lawrence A. Walker, 56, longtime Western Montana College of Education faculty member, died in his sleep Sunday from a heart attack. He joined the college staff in 1958 after nine years as director of training and Dillon public schools superintendent. Born October 15, 1907 in Arcadia Iowa, he moved with his family to Minnesota as a child. Funeral services will be at St James Episcopal Church with burial in Mountain View Cemetery.
Paul Robeson, 65, ends five year self exile returning to the United States from East Berlin. He arrives to a crowd including his wife Eslanda and son Paul Jr. He says he is happy to be back in the civil rights movement and questions about his illness are limited.
A brutal cold wave grips the Midwest and plains with 38 below in Bemidji and subzero readings in Eastern Iowa. Heavy snow warnings stretch from Arkansas to the Smokies while ice and freezing rain complicate travel in New Mexico, Texas, Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. A young couple perished in an expressway crash near Louisville, frozen before discovery.
Butte stores stay open until 9 p m tonight for the final Christmas shopping session while Tuesday keeps 5 30 p m closing. State liquor stores operate today and Tuesday then close Wednesday and Thursday. Christmas Day mail deliveries are limited. postmaster A H Wilkinson notes only specials. County and city offices close Tuesday with federal offices open. schools observe holidays Monday and Tuesday and return after New Year.
