Lakonia Disaster Triggers Rescue of 877 Survivors

Rescue vessels ferried 877 exhausted survivors from the Greek liner Lakonia after a Christmas cruise burst into flames and exploded off northwest Africa. At least 24 dead and more missing were reported as crews scoured the sea and other ships carried on toward Madeira and the Canaries.

Mother and Children Escape Fire at Keb's Truck Stop

A trailer house five miles east of Whitehall at Keb's Truck Stop burned Monday morning. Mrs. Esther Sternod and her three children escaped in night clothes. the family dog died. Fire officials blamed the heater and cited high winds. Sternod and family had stayed at the site for three weeks.

Chinook winds melted ice on Montana roads as officials forecast Christmas Day temperatures well above normal. Highs reached 53 at Broadus while Missoula logged 20 degrees amid scattered new snow and drifting snow hazards.
