Berliners Defeat Cold For Weekend Reunions

West Berliners braved cold and snow to cross the anti refugee barrier for weekend reunions with loved ones behind the Iron Curtain. Official tallies show about 7 000 permitted crossings on Saturday, the second full day of the Communist approved Yuletide slit. Friday saw around 3 500 crossings.

Delayed farewell as East Berlin gates open with smiles

Guards at the Berlin Wall stained by recent opening greet visitors with cheer. Bulgarian Diplomat Admits CIA Spy Case at UN

A Bulgarian Communist diplomat at the United Nations confessed to spying for the CIA for seven years. Ivan-Assen Hristov Georgiev, 35, served as a senior U N counselor and allegedly passed political economic and military secrets while leading a double life with mistresses and secret meetings in Central Park and New York hotels. He awaits trial in Sofia for treason and espionage.

Partly cloudy today through Monday with a warming trend. Highs Sunday 10-15 east and 20-35 west, Sunday night lows 0-5 north east and 10-25 southwest. Monday highs 15-25 northeast and 30-35 southwest with fog and little temperature change. Precipitation ends Saturday at 5 p.m.

Mourning Period for Kennedy Ends Today

A 30 day mourning period for President John F Kennedy ends Sunday with nationwide memorials. A torch will be lit at Arlington at sunset and carried to the Lincoln Memorial as President Johnson attends. Flags at half staff will be raised across the country near Monday, with New York observing Lehman mourning until Jan 5.

Montana Quake Felt Near Bozeman Friday

A southwest Montana quake about 10 miles from the August 1959 disaster rattled seismograph needles, reported by Eugene George and Richard Ward of Montana State College. Two Montana Power Co. servicemen also felt the tremor.

Santa and the Shrine aid a crippled child

Raymond Gonzales is en route to Spokane for treatment at the Shrine Crippled Children's Hospital. Percy Trevethan of the Bagdad Temple coordinated aid after seeing Raymond hobble to school. Raymond, son of Uriel and the late family, will be in hospital for Christmas.

Bloodshed erupts in Greek Turkish dispute in Nicosia

In Nicosia, Cyprus, Saturday violence between Greek and Turkish Cypriots leaves two Turkish Cypriots dead and nine wounded in two clashes after weeks of constitutional tension. A midnight fight with machine guns pistols and rifles occurred between a Turkish crowd and a police patrol in the divided capital. Continued on page 2.

Crash Fatal to Billings Man

Raymond Vernon Garrigus of Billings died in a Terry hospital Saturday night about five hours after a head on crash west of Terry. He succumbed at 8 20 p m to brain injuries. Also hospitalized was Lloyd Malmend of Glendive with chest injuries in fair condition. Passenger Robert Storlie of Glendive had cuts but was not hospitalized. Garrigus was Montana’s 224th highway fatality in 1963, ranking seventh worst on record. The Montana toll for 1963 follows 256 deaths, with 275 the 1961 peak.

Santa to Visit in Butte Today at Clark Park

Santa Claus is due to arrive at Clark Park Sunday at 1 30 p m. Don Peoples recreation director says he will carry a treat for each child. Last year he arrived by helicopter. this year a City of Butte truck. Hot chocolate will be served at Clark Park Club House all day Tuesday.

Stalin’s Birth Anniversary Noted in Moscow Shrine Visit

On Stalin’s birth anniversary a few Georgians and Russians gathered at Red Square to glimpse Stalin’s grave near Lenin’s mausoleum but the area was blocked to the public for a month. A Georgian climbed over a barrier seeking a view, and locals discussed whether Stalin had any monument.
