In Lima the Pan American conference opens Friday as German representatives and propaganda ministry spokesmen mingle with delegates. Private talks portray a pro totalitarian stance and urge Latin American nations to favor stronger government over democracy amid U S efforts to secure Americas for Americans.
Robert L. Smith, Montana’s World’s Fair representative, previews the state’s display noting its original concept and colorful models. D. A. McKinnon and William G. Ferguson, both Montana commission members, report the exhibit features paintings and ranch life scenes by Forest Service and Montana Highway Commission artists.
Paris reports a signed Franco German pact of friendship pledging a temporary respite from territorial claims. The three point accord acknowledges the Rhine frontier and commits to good neighbor relations while reserving consultation on issues with third powers.
Joseph H. Briney, noted Butte businessman and former Walkerville mayor, was nominated by acclamation for president of the Butte Pioneer club at a crowded meeting held last night at the American Legion hall. Al LaForrest and Wilfred Davis were chosen as vice presidents with election set for December 20. Other nominations included Mrs. Anna Quinn for secretary and WM Moetz treasurer.

Count of Turin is cheered in Milan crowds while Andrea Ippolito proclaims no need to discuss Tunisia we will go there. Police reinforce to keep protesters from the French embassy. Demonstrations also erupt at French consulates.
An organizing committee of 50 plus members from many groups met at the Finlen hotel to launch work on a 10 day celebration in early July marking Montana statehood’s 50th anniversary. Mayor Charles A Hauswirth was elected chairman with W S Thompson as secretary and Charles Gallagher as treasurer. The event aims to draw visitors from across Montana and tourists bound for World’s Fairs, featuring Fourth of July events, the Butte Rodeo, a large air show and a 1000 person historical pageant, plus a museum and a giant flag display.
Congressman Lea of California and chairman of the House interstate commerce committee said he would introduce a railroad bill soon after Congress opens. He aims to address carriers' problems with broad hearings and invite proposals to improve transportation. Lea met with ICC Chairman Splawn, and a presidentially appointed committee of railroad management and labor is studying the issue.
Forest officials announce 19 cutting days remain before Christmas for private use trees in most of the Deer Lodge district, excluding Thompson park. Supervisor Joy notes about 98 percent of the forest is closed to commercial cutting and patrols will enforce limits.
A jury of scientists in San Francisco authenticates a tarnished brass plate inscribed in Elizabethan English as a marker set by Sir Francis Drake on a 1579 voyage to northern California near Drake’s Bay. The plate, found by a chauffeur and later a picnicker, lay buried for centuries before reemerging.
Montana officials and industry leaders criticize President Roosevelt on coddling the domestic manganese sector. They urge production focus and tariff protection to ensure war mineral independence, citing Montana’s 1918 output and potential in the Butte district.
A Seattle witness testified that DeCasto Mayer and Mrs. Mary Eleanor Smith drove James Bassett’s car on the night of his disappearance ten years ago and carried two blood stained gunny sacks in the back. Mayer and Smith, both charged with first degree murder, are suspected of killing Bassett and burying his body near Seattle.
The state canvassing board completed tabulation of the November 8 general election and certified winners. J Thorkelson leads in the first congressional district with 49 253 votes to J J O Connell 41 319. James F O Connor defeats W C Husband in the second district by 8 874. Howard A Johnson wins as Chief Justice with a 12 504 margin over Thomas J Walker.
A Montana forecast calls for partly cloudy skies on Wednesday and Thursday with little temperature change. No precipitation expected and conditions to remain mild across the region through midweek.
Senator Bridges of New Hampshire charged that the Public Works Administration backed a sale of private electrical properties by Nebraska water power districts. He warned the plan funnels Wall Street finance through a $2.225 million 2 percent fee to agent Guy G Myers and urged a full inquiry into whether the districts could not instead acquire profitable utilities.
The Butte post office braces for an influx of nixies during the heavy holiday mail season. Nixies are unreadable letters or misaddressed mail designed to confuse clerks and mail handlers. Superintendent William Jackson explains nixies are fictitious addresses or jokebased letters that complicate sorting.
The Butte K of C council approves six day carnival with Dr. J J Kelley and Grand Knight Patrick McDonough as co chairs. About 200 attendees expected for the opening night as booths, costumes and stunts promise entertainment galore. Materials worth thousands ordered from local businesses and deliveries due within a day or two. The carnival runs 7 pm Friday to Thursday December 15 with no festival this Sunday.
