President Roosevelt spoke at the University of North Carolina warning that liberal reforms must move forward after the congressional elections. He said Republican gains will not deter reform and urged continued leadership for world democracy amid rising dictatorships.
William Chisholm longtime Butte Daily Post staff member died in a local hospital after months of illness. A 34 year Butte resident born October 4 1883 in Bonar Bridge Scotland he served 15 years with the Post. Family and many friends were at his bedside as his condition worsened.
The Supreme Court ruled that the National Labor Relations Board cannot nullify an AFL contract, but the NLRB retains broad jurisdiction over industry. It denied Tom Mooney’s counsel permission for a writ of habeas corpus. It refused to review a slander suit against Representative Tinkham. Decisions on TVA constitutional validity and state vote changes on child labor amendments were deferred for at least a week.
The Supreme Court held the National Labor Relations Board exceeded its authority in nullifying labor contracts between an A F L union and Consolidated Edison and affiliates. It affirmed federal jurisdiction over interstate commerce matters and upheld part of the board order while criticizing failed notice to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
Two witnesses at a Senate committee hearing condemned current tax laws. Hazelett of Hazelett Metal urged a new system of high levies on those responsible for strikes to boost production and re employment. Giannini of Bank of America backed reforms amid the questioning.
Montana schools and colleges will add about four percent of a million dollars in facilities through Public Works Administration projects. Regional PWA offices in Omaha report construction set to begin by January 1 under the 1938 program. The federal share is 45 percent, totaling $1,996,600 for 29 educational building projects across the state, including 30 schools and additions with a total cost of $4,000,921.
Commander Theodore Winters and son Lieutenant Theodore Winters Jr. testified Mayer and Mrs. Mary Smith last saw James Eugene Bassett alive. Bassett vanished in Seattle ten years ago after visiting Mayer to sell a car. Mayer and Smith, later arrested in Oakland, face first degree murder charges. Winters described Bassett leaving Bremerton with Mayer and later heard Bassett sold his car and planned a Vancouver trip. He searched for Bassett on the ship and by Victoria before notifying police.
Mrs. Mildred Morton, 38, died in Wichita in what coroner G C Davis called a human torch death by self assault. Signs showed she disrobed in the garage at the rear of her home, covered herself with gasoline, and set fire to herself. Ill health was blamed.
Representatives of about 200 civic and fraternal orders labor unions clubs and other groups meet at the Finlen hotel at 8 PM to map preliminary plans for a ten day July celebration in Butte. The event marks Montana statehoods fiftieth anniversary and the 75th anniversary of gold discovery in the district featuring Fourth of July activities rodeo a giant pageant and new attractions expected to draw thousands.
Consolidation efforts and economy push Montana school district net debt down from 11,625,000 in 1923 to 7,351,000 by June 30, 1938. Reforms after 1919 classified property law spurred new districts and bonds for schools, later trimmed amid shrinking valuations and higher levies.

Mrs Daly, a former Butte boy’s wife and Los Angeles dweller, gained fame for her handmade dolls and was profiled in Saturday Night. She sent a doll to the local event.
The Butte Auxiliary for the Rehabilitation of Crippled Children reports a balance on hand of 8965.80 and will not conduct a fund drive this year. Dr. F E Savage presided at the annual meeting held at the Butte Chamber of Commerce. Clinics occur twice yearly at St James hospital with Dr. Louis W Allard of Billings volunteering. Patients travel to Bt Vincent's hospital in Billings for treatments and operations at no charge, with transport provided by the Northern Pacific railroad. The current advisory board was re-elected.
Jay G. Diamond of the federal Bureau of Agricultural Economics reports Montana farmers had a modest overall price rise for the month ending November 15. Prices advanced for alfalfa seed sweet clover seed sheep lambs eggs wool hay and several other commodities while losses occurred for corn rye horses and chickens. Wheat flax seed potatoes beans apples hogs beef cattle and retail milk prices held steady.
Defense Minister Oswald Pirow of the Union of South Africa warned that Europe is drifting into war after a European tour including Portugal Spain Germany Italy Belgium and the Netherlands. He met leaders Chamberlain Mussolini and Hitler and urged a shift in outlook within a month or two or international tension will break next spring. He blamed psychological factors and proposed a refugee international loan and land allocations to ease the crisis.
The Greek freighter Akti sank after colliding with the German liner La Plata in the English Channel. Seventeen crewmen were lost. 15 survivors were rescued, including Captain Minas Varvdavas. Survivors said the ship went down quickly, broken nearly in two by the La Plata’s bow.
Montana expects partly cloudy skies on Tuesday and Wednesday with a drop in temperatures Tuesday. Winds remain light with no precipitation in the forecast.
Dr. Harold C. Urey, Nobel prize winner in chemistry, announced in Buffalo that he perfected a process to isolate and produce heavy carbon atoms. After three years, success came last week at Columbia University laboratories, enabling study of heavy atoms used in medicine and revealing mammal metabolism through atom movements.
The Montana Association of Commercial Organization Secretaries wrapped two days of meetings in Livingston with K. E. Burleigh of Glendive named president, succeeding M. Staff of Helena. FE. C. Stiefel of Bozeman became vice president and William Ferguson of Montanans Inc. was reelected secretary. Dempsey of Whitefish and Clement of Lewistown joined the board as directors amid talks on national advertising for Montana recreation and the 1939 World's Fair.
