Britain announces a new secret device deemed satisfactory to defeat magnetic mines. Reports say two steamers were sunk but rescue crews were saved. A Nazi mine layer also sank in the same action.
Helsinki reports Soviet invaders checked as Finland claims fresh successes in land sea and air fighting. A government spokesman notes 1,500 Russian troops captured in the eastern sector near Lake Ladoga while Helsinki braces for more bombing and repairs after the week’s raids.
Russia refuses to attend the League of Nations council meeting as Finland seeks sanctions. Molotov calls Finland's protest illegal and hints Moscow may quit the league amid Argentina and others pushing for Russia's expulsion over the Finland invasion.
Moscow reports Molotov declares no talks with Finland's Ryti government and insists on negotiating with the revolutionary Finnish People's Democratic Republic led by Otto Kuusinen. Red army advances in Karelia and near Petsamo are noted as snowstorms hinder operations.
British mission arrives in Paris to confer on applying a tightened embargo on German exports. A British source says a secret weapon against magnetic mines is "very satisfactory." Fishermen volunteers on trawler minesweepers use guarded navy methods as the blockade extends to seize German experts aboard neutral ships.
Gov. Robert T. Jones said Winnie Ruth Judd, the trunk murderess who escaped twice from the Arizona State asylum, was deliberately agitated into fleeing due to a lack of funds to hire guards. He cited no further details but suggested the administration faced public embarrassment.
About 150 automobile dealers and their ladies attended a banquet at the Finlen hotel marking the first day of the Montana Automobile Dealers association two day convention. Jack Nemeck presided as toast master as registration showed wide state representation and optimism for a robust 1940.
Jack O'Brien, 72, was struck while crossing at Florence and Grand. He was found by Edith Weber and taken to St James Hospital by Officers Malthen and Blewett in good condition with severe bruises and possible left ankle fracture. Description of hit run car was vague.
Mrs. Eliza Daly 81 widow of John J. Daly famed Salt Lake City mining figure died in Hollywood after a car struck her and her daughter Dora Lillard 50 wife of Mark W. Lillard. The daughter is in critical condition with a skull fracture and broken leg. police released the driver. Daly was cousin and business associate of Marcus Daly.
Montana Supreme Court decides state taxation laws apply to Fort Peck reservation residents, requiring taxes on automobiles. Chief Justice Howard A. Johnson writes the opinion reversing prior 1937 and 1938 decisions. Valley County sought an injunction against McCone County to stop license issuance for cars owned in Valley County.
Marne Gustafson, about 65, narrowly escaped death when the ice opened on Georgetown lake Sunday night near Anaconda. His brother Edward, 73, drowned there on November 21 1937 after the ice broke away near Flint Creek dam. Marie Gustafson also had been ice fishing alone and escaped a similar fate.
The United States will not recognize any Russian conquest gained by force, yet officials indicate little urge to sever diplomatic ties with the Soviet. The policy, set during Japan's Manchuria seizure and used in other cases, will apply to Soviet actions as well.
Argentina urges the League of Nations to expel Russia over the invasion of Finland. Foreign Minister Jose Maria Cantilo sent a sharp message linking anti-Communist actions to a wider regional stance. Cantilo held a midnight conference with Uruguay’s ambassador as leaders in Montevideo and Buenos Aires signaled similar moves.
At the 21st International Hay and Grain show in Chicago Indiana farmers claimed top honors. C E Troyer of La Fontaine won the corn championship becoming the fourth corn king for the 53 year old, while Francis Lloyd Rigby of Wembley Alberta Canada was named wheat king after defending his title.
Seven Boy Scouts will receive advancements in rank and 19 others will earn a total of 32 merit badges at the regular December court of honor at 8 o clock tonight in a county courthouse court room. Scout Executive Frazer announced, Judge Frank I Riley presides, and a banner will go to the troop with the greatest achievement. Robert Marshall of Troop 3 will receive a Bronze Palm at the ceremony. continuous on page 2 col 8.
