A 40,000 crowd watched George Ferrie’s homemade plane rise, stall, and plunge into a parked craft at the national air races in Chicago. Ferrie died, and Miss Martie Bowman of Hempstead was unhurt as another craft affected by the crash nearly hit her. W S Allison narrowly escaped injury as spectators fled. The accident marked the meet’s second fatal mishap, bringing total fatalities to three. The radical design plane had briefly gained altitude before overturning.

Amarillo Texas August 30 Up A D Payne who confessed to killing his wife by placing three sticks of dynamite in the family car died in his Potter county jail cell when an explosion blew him apart early today. Jail attendants reported no other injuries and said it appeared to be self inflicted.

Stolen Watches Recovered By Butte Police
Ten watches stolen in a year old burglary and one from months ago were recovered by police with the arrest of Hampton P. Lovejoy as he tried to pawn a watch. In Lovejoy’s room officers found revolvers and razors, all new. Ten watches matched numbers for the Arizona street theft, one for a miner’s watch from Frank Novich. Lovejoy, 43, claims Georgia origin and recent work as a dishwasher in Deer Lodge. Chief Murphy travels to Deer Lodge to verify his story.

In Eugene Oregon Vic Sutherland a 68 year old fugitive and alleged moonshiner shot and killed two officers and wounded two others during a bid to stop arrest of his son and himself. A posse of 50 with bloodhounds pursued him after the early morning shooting near Marcola Oregon. The slain officers were Joe Baunders Daley and Lee Brown. Wounded were Rodney Roach and John Carlile. Robbery charge filed after county jail release

Chicago dispatch reports two men trunched a machine gun to the door of 28 year old John Kruspe when he answered a bell. He died almost instantly as a stream of lead struck him.
