Meredith Becomes First Negro To Get Ole Miss Diploma
James H. Meredith graduated from the University of Mississippi becoming the first Black student to receive a degree in the school's 115 year history. He had arrived on campus amid a deadly riot 11 months earlier as federal troops restored order and escorted him to registration. At commencement he walked with his family and about 2,500 in attendance as Chancellor Williams awarded the degree and a hush fell over the grove.
