A London paper says police have named both the mastermind and the gang leader behind the record 7.3 million royal mail train robbery. The News of the World says the leader is an ex army type nicknamed the major and that Scotland Yard is close to solving the case.

Montana leaders mum on deal charges in tax dispute

Gov Tim Babcock and Dan Fulton offered no comment on Harriet Miller's charge that Fulton authorized a deal during a tax dispute over a 14.8 mill levy for Montana schools. Miller accused Fulton while Babcock flew to Idaho and then planned a return as the rift over school funding widens. All three are Republicans.

Debutante Janet Jennings Auchincloss 18, half-sister of Jacqueline Kennedy, was feted at a Venetian Ball at Hammersmith Farm in Newport. 800 guests attended as New York decorators created gondola themed decor with two marquees, a 40-foot gondola stage, and authentic Italian tunes.

Soldier Frank J. Noland 25 Dies in Georgia

The body of Pfc. Frank J. Noland 25 of 18 E Summit Butte arrives Monday. He died Thursday in Augusta after a brief illness. Born February 22 1938 in Butte he worked as a miner later a car and insurance salesman. Survived by brother Joseph and sisters Mrs Neil Duddy and Mrs Frank Mishkot all of Butte and several nephews and nieces. White’s Funeral Home handles arrangements.

Postmaster and wife die in Arlee home blaze

Kenneth and Aileen LeCompte, longtime Arlee postmaster and his wife, perished in an early morning fire that consumed their landmark home near U S Highway 93. Firefighters reached the scene by 2:30 a.m. and recovered the bodies, with the blaze threatening the nearby post office.

Ferry sinks in East China Sea with many dead or missing

The Midori Maru, a 300 ton ferry converted from naval duty, sank off Sand Island near Okinawa after heavy waves struck it broadside. About 240 aboard were unaccounted for, with perhaps 55 dead or missing. 185 were rescued including four U.S. servicemen.

Serbian Church Dedicatory Ceremony in Butte

Fire destroys Anaconda area home after water runs out

A Delbert Clark residence in Valley View Homes burned after local fire trucks ran dry seeking water. Neighbors rescued two television sets and chairs as crews from Anaconda Forest Protective Association and Opportunity Volunteer Fire Dept failed to contain the blaze. No injuries reported. cause undetermined.
