East German police detain four American students at gunpoint
Four American students including 19 year old David Merrill were held for two hours at gunpoint by East German police in East Berlin while touring sites near Hitler’s former bunker. Britons were also stopped and sent back to West Germany over passport issues. Merrill and companions were released at Friedrich Strasse without interrogation.

Edwin Stuart Townsend known as Pop Townsend co-publisher of the Dillon Tribune Examiner and former Dillon mayor died after a lengthy illness at Barrett Hospital. Born September 14 1890 he served in World War I and built a 50 year journalism career in the West and Midwest. He leaves a daughter Lucille Finlayson of San Antonio a son Edwin C. Townsend of Dillon and five grandchildren. Funeral Thursday at 2 p.m. in Brundage Chapel Dillon with burial at Mountain View Cemetery.

Two B 47 Bombers Collide Over Western Iowa
Two B 47 jet bombers from the 310th Bomb Wing based at Schilling AFB collided in the air over Western Iowa. At least two crewmen were killed with bodies found in wreckage and seats.
