Canada and the United States reach an exchange of notes to stockpile U.S. supplied nuclear warheads under joint control for Canada’s Bomarc and Voodoo systems and CF104 Starfighters with NATO forces in Europe. Pearson says immediate effect with no time limit.
More than 400 Montana boys register Saturday for the 17th American Legion Boys State session at Western Montana College in Dillon. An 8 p.m. Sunday address by Kurt H. Peters, noted lecturer and Montana Dakota Utilities executive, follows greetings from city officials and college reps.
Police report a Thursday night vandalism incident at Webster Garfield School with 15 windows broken. No injuries reported and investigation ongoing.
Secretary of Labor Wirtz said the railroads and five unions have accepted arbitration on two key issues but the work rules dispute remains in a very critical stage. He warned settlement could be private and noted unions imposed conditions on management procedures. If unresolved or no legislation passes, railroads plan to enforce rules on Aug. 29, risking a nationwide strike.
An American Air Force captain parachuted into the ocean from a shattered F86 jet 60 miles southeast of Nantucket. He was rescued by a Soviet fishing vessel the Johannes Ware after Coast Guard aircraft coordinated the pickup. The Soviet crew tended his injuries and lent dry clothes before his return to Otis Air Force Base.
In the eastern region east of Divide the forecast is fair today and tonight with a high near 82 and a low around 42. Sunday brings partly cloudy skies with a few showers in the far north and warmer readings on Saturday. West of Divide cooler, with fair conditions Saturday and Sunday and highs near 78 to 88, lows 35 to 45.

Babcock ordered a full review while Miller defends the existing estimates and criticizes the association for opposing funding.
Tri County Fair in Deer Lodge offers horse racing and rodeo thrills with a Saturday color parade at 11 a.m. Featuring Jerri Huffman Montana rodeo queen and the Centennial Montanettes. Sunday highlights include the Tri-County Derby with a $300 purse over a mile and an eighth.
Two Havre men Gary Hostetter 23 and Claude Sargent 28 died when a light plane crashed while they were scouting a 1500 acre prairie fire east of Havre. The wreckage was found nose-down on a Blaine County hillside about 90 miles east of Havre. Sargent had left Havre Airport at 5 15 pm telling helpers he would return in about an hour.
The Madison County Centennial Fair opens with the largest parade in fair history and judging of thousands of exhibits in open division. Special attractions include a Montana National Guard 25 ton howitzer and a Dillon miniature stagecoach drawn by Pekingese dogs.
