General Hugh S. Johnson visited the Midwest urging support for the president's reemployment program. He told 15 000 in St. Louis that success depends on people in each town and especially women. He said idle ranks are thinning and vowed action against suspected cheating will come later.
Washington reports a new farm drive mobilizing about 30 000 workers to reduce wheat acreage in major producing regions. By week’s end county control groups should be formed across the four principal wheat areas as administrators seek contracts to trim harvests and balance bread, breakfast foods and pretzel needs with the national grain supply.
Dr. Carlos Manuel De Cespedes, new Cuban president, says Cubans are grateful to the United States for its stance on Cuban sovereignty. Three transients were killed and eight injured when a Spokane Portland & Seattle freight train derailed near Wishram Washington about 100 miles east of Portland late today. Fifteen cars piled up in the wreck with the cause undetermined. Relief trains were being sent from Wishram and Vancouver to the scene.
Dwayne Hoage, a Boston farmer and former Wisconsin lake rescuer, is set to receive half of a $250,000 estate from Mrs. L. Mc Donneel of Santa Monica. The will recounts his 1918 life saving at a Wisconsin lake and notes the bequest as a memorial to the act.

Six masked shotgun bandits raided the Nippersink lodge country club near Kenosha Wisconsin early today striking 200 guests and employees and escaping with about 3000 dollars in cash. Rose Ruda an 18 year old daughter of a Belgian mother and German father, shot and killed robber John Phillips during a Cincinnati robbery at a restaurant after retrieving a revolver from the kitchen. She was wounded in the arm but helped police capture the assailant before he died.
A violent late day storm swept 50 miles across eastern New York from Sacandaga lake to the Vermont line. It damaged small hotels and felled hundreds of trees in Saratoga Springs, blocked highways, and cut off Saratoga Lake. roofs were torn from Adirondack Inn and several smaller hotels. The storm also hit Amsterdam Cambridge Pittstown Valley Falls and Mechanicville prompting state police to clear the New York Montreal highway.
Advices from reliable quarters say Señora Elvira Machado wife of Cuba’s former president and several family members with personal servants left Cuba this afternoon aboard a gunboat and would land at Key West tomorrow.
The Hoboes of America held their 25th convention in Chicago and approved a code of fair practice. It sets wages for sidewalk snow removal and coal shoveling at 50 cents per hour and assigns values for window cleaning. Delegates from major hubs claimed 50,000 votes and international observers attended, while protests over freight car design were noted.
Two men Pat McQuinn and Ray Sullivan were badly hurt in a late Saturday collision near Meaderville. McQuinn suffered a severe head laceration while Sullivan sustained a hip injury with no confirmed fracture. seven vehicles were involved in a head on crash.
Landen, Wyo August 13. Pete Arnatas a Mexican accused of brutal attack on Frances McDonald of Worland Wyo was captured near Lysite sixty miles northeast of here and placed in the county jail. Miss McDonald was attacked while continued on Page 1 Cob 3.
Jene Arnette 20, of East Liverpool Ohio, fell nearly 100 feet while fleeing a steep canyon wall during an Angelus forest fire fight. Arnette died after a fall as Ellis Ryan and Raymond Bochant attempted rescue amid nine fires sparked by electrical storms. Bochant and Ryan escaped as flames spread. Arnette’s body was to be sent home. the Boquet canyon fire covered over 40 acres and was later contained.
The forecast for Montana calls for generally fair conditions on Monday and Tuesday with only minor temperature changes. Highs and lows likely to remain close to recent ranges across the state.
The four day American Legion rodeo in Butte concluded with a finale crowd enjoying top bronc riding near world record bulldogging times calf roping and wild cow milking. Three Calgary riders won top honors in the bronc riding as Pete Knight carried over last year’s world title.
