The council fixed a 40.55 mill tax levy for the year, up 3.70 mills from last year. The 1916, 1921, and 1931 bond issues plus judgments against the city drive most of the increase, with 21.25 mills for sinking funds and 12 mills for general fund and admin use.
President Roosevelt and Gen. Hugh S. Johnson push to speed coal steel and oil codes with production control backing. NRA considers minimum prices for drugs and tobacco while miners report violations of return-to-work terms. Officials forecast rapid code advances with steel and oil leaders arriving this week.
Gus Petras a 46 year old miner lay near death from two bullet wounds after a street shooting blamed on Louis Adrianopoulos 56. Petras said he defended the U S form of government against bolshevik arguments and denied striking the assailant. Adrianopoulos was seized by bystanders and held until police arrived. Petras was treated at St James hospital with bullets entering from the back near the left shoulder and above the left hip. The incident occurred at Park and Wyoming streets drawing onlookers.
Butte endured a second hot spell with temperatures reaching 93 at 1 p.m. local residents faced intense heat and discomfort as clouds darkened the sky and rain failed to arrive. Helena Aug 14 The Associated Merchants of Montana called on state merchants to join the NRA effort and sign Roosevelt's agreement by August 31. Butte and Walkerville area residents face a total levy of 54.375 mills as county commissioners set the 1933 34 general tax rate at 22.5 mills. The school district No 1 levies bring the combined rate to 54.375 mills, a 4.625 mill increase from last year, with a total county budget of 573 601 12 dollars for county government.

In Fort Worth August 14 details emerged on how a routine airplane over a Wise county farmstead aided in tracking Harvey Bailey. Urschel reported daily 9 15 am and 5 45 pm passes, except one Sunday when weather forced the pilot off course enabling officers to circle the probable area.
Federal agents rounded up eleven people led by Harvey J. Bailey in connections to the Urschel kidnapping and the Kansas City Union Station gun slayings. Bailey slept at a Paradise Texas farm when captured. marked ransom cash was found on him. A man named Albert L. Bates, identified as George Bates, also tied to the Urschel case, was arrested in Denver.
Ten regional inspectors will be assigned to oversee the $3.3 billion U.S. public works program to prevent graft and ensure contract performance. The inspectors, all engineers, will verify specifications are followed and that government funds are properly disbursed. Names include Roy F. Bessey of Portland with districts covering Montana Idaho Washington and Eastern Oregon.
