The Girl from Prosperity by George Randolph Chester
James E. Carroll, a young country man, travels from Prosperity Indiana to New York City. He splurges on a Broadway barber shop and a string of flirtations with the Manicure Girl and Miss Williams. His swaggering bets, fake wealth, and misreads of urban life lead to a fall, ending with a visit from Elizabeth Ruth Emery. The streetwise Miss Williams arranges a hopeful return home and a possible partnership, while Carroll’s ego breaks under exposure.
