Survivor account details sinking of destroyer Jacob Jones
Lieut J K Richards describes the 1942 sinking of the American destroyer Jacob Jones after a torpedo strike. Only two small boats and three life rafts escaped. after 17 hours exposure the sick were rescued. The vessel sank at 4 29 p m and a British ship later picked up rafts and survivors. United States Guard Formed With 25000 Auxiliary Troops
Washington reports the United States Guard will activate a 25 000 member auxiliary force to supplement state and other units guarding war supplies and industries. Memorial of Mrs Lear Deese Ends in Peaceful Rest
To the Editor The Journal notes Mrs Lear Deese died December 6 after paralysis from December 2. She left two sons Burke Deere of Lanes Creek township and Preston Deese of Stouts thirteen grandchildren and siblings Mack Neal Deese Elizabeth Parker Leda Boon and Monnir Deese all of Zoar community. A devout Christian, she was 76 and noted she hoped to join no church but never missed a service. Her remains lie in the local cemetery with Rev B C Snyder officiating and friends echoing her faith.

First American shot against Austria fired at Piave
Representative Tinkham of Boston fired the first American shell against Austria from a 149 millimeter gun near Dona Di Piave. The shot burst with a black smoke cloud as Italian batterymen cheered. A December 9 Italian torpedo raid on Trieste harbor sank two Austrian monarch battleships. The telegram from Italian naval attaché Captain L Vannutelli, relayed by Commander C Pfister, says four torpedoes hit the targets after crossing mines. All Italian torpedo boats returned safely to base.
