Jacob Jones Sinks Under German Submarine in War Zone

Washington reports the American destroyer Jacob Jones was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine in the war zone last Thursday night near the Atlantic. Seventy three crewmen were lost or missing, with 43 survivors including Lieut. Norman Scott and Lieut. Commander David W. Bagley among those rescued.

Halifax Blizzard Buries City After Munitions Blast

Halifax officials release counts from the disaster with 1,280 known dead and 25,000 homeless as a third storm hammers the city. It accuses the bourgeois of funding the revolt and says workers and soldiers' deputies authorize local garrisons to strike without central orders and bar mediation.

Italians Repel Austro-German Attack at Asiago Passes

Italian Army reports halted the assault by Austro-German forces in the Brenta valley area near Frenzela and Gadena passes. Tug Eugene F. Morgan Sinks in Northeast Gale Off Atlantic City

The tug Eugene F. Morgan foundered three miles off the upper beach near Atlantic City as a northeast gale raged. The captain and 10 crew members were lost. two barges carrying loads from New York to Philadelphia were driven ashore. Coast guard units recovered survivors from the second barge, while five bodies washed ashore, including Fred Riley and Stanley Hart. The captain reportedly cut the tow free with an axe to reduce loss of life.

Compulsory School Law Notice for Ages 8 to 14

The county wide compulsory school law now covers children from eight to fourteen. The 1917 act changed the age range and the Board of Education declares the rule operative November 19 in all county schools. Many still have not complied. attend to avoid an attendance officer visit. The Delinquent Committee asks the community to fund doctors who will serve the country. Dr Payne and Dr Lovill are slated to depart December 13 and need donations now. They will forego medical service for those who fail to pay.

Philadelphia Soldier Given Three Years For Refusal To Obey

At Camp Meade Private First Class Claude W Enlow of Philadelphia was sentenced to three years imprisonment and dishonorable discharge from the service for refusing to obey superior officers when ordered to do kitchen police duty. He forfeits all pay and allowances. Kitchen police duty involves duties like washing dishes and peeling potatoes.
