A fire at the Mobile Elks Club on Government Street near Joachim damaged the building with an estimated $15,000 loss. Firemen battled for over an hour, flames spreading to the attic and roof, with water and bat-like debris complicating efforts. Traffic halted as smoke filled the area and part of the ceiling on the second floor collapsed.
A Mobile Chamber of Commerce committee plans a formal program to assist auto tourists passing through the city. A city reception committee of Mobilians will ensure courteous treatment by civilians and traffic officers, and a map with routes and directions is being prepared. City officials urge complaints against discourteous officers and emphasize maintaining Mobile as a pleasant tourist destination.
State officer J. W. McClung failed to answer charges of violating the prohibition law drunkenness and disorderly conduct in circuit court before Judge Safford Berney. E. W. Hansen, an Alabama Dry Dock employee, files misconduct charges with the Mobile city commission seeking the chief's dismissal. A public hearing is set for October 20. Hansen alleges the chief annoyed his two young daughters by insisting they ride with him, while Rehm blames engine trouble for stopping his car on the street.
Reckless driving case against Ollie Parson arising from Monday collision at Royal and Dauphin streets was postponed as Irene Pose of 259 State street could not attend. Pose reportedly not seriously hurt and expected to be out by Saturday. Defendant B fined $15 on speeding plea in recorder's court.
Johnny alias Shine Matthews a 11 summers old negro who asked a white man for a ride and was picked up by United States Deputy Marshal Noah Gewin was taken to Mobile county jail charged with conspiring to violate the national prohibition law. He was committed to jail until relatives can be contacted.
