Allied armies press pan Macedonian fronts driving Bulgarians as Entente troops, over 600000 strong, engage across the region. Bulgars evacuate Greek forts amid a broad offensive with strategic gains expected as the war moves.
Secretary Daniels claimed a Democratic victory in Maine citing the large turnout and the spread for Milliken. He said Progressives backed Republicans, forecasting shifts in New York Illinois and Ohio but not in Maine as the campaign continued.
An Exe Telegraph dispatch from Athens reports the Entente offensive on the Macedonian front defeated the Bulgarians after a 36 hour battle. The Bulgarians endured heavy losses and began a retreat, pursued by Allied forces.
Paris September 12 French troops on the Macedonian front launched an offensive against Bulgarians and captured all opponent positions on a two mile front to a depth of about 800 yards an official announcement said today.
French troops cooperating with British forces in the Struma front offensive in Greek Macedonia report the capture of a village from Bulgarian forces. British units crossed the river and took trenches on the east bank.
Paris dispatch says Bulgaria has evacuated all coastal forts including Kavala which they occupied last month. The forts were handed to the Greeks after the arrival of warships from a semi official source. Continued on page seven.
Emperor William sends a personal note to President Wilson via the state department in response to the famine relief appeal for Poland. The note follows replies from King George and President Poincare saying relief is blocked by German policy and Polish crops reduce need. Chicago leaders Zaleski and Zurowski seek a Navy shipload of condensed milk as a Christmas gift for Polish babies, asking Secretary Daniels for warship use.
Sir Henry William Dunn, named Lord Mayor of London, will take office in November becoming the third Roman Catholic to hold the post in recent years. A popular figure, Dunn has long served charitable groups including treasurer of the Alton Cripples Home and worked with Sir William Treloar to aid London's poor cripples.
The Alabama branch of the National League of Postmasters meets in Mobile with four county postmasters attending. James A. Carney presides, TL H. Read is secretary, and delegates tour the old and new Mobile post offices after a morning session on postal service improvements.
Rev D W Bosdell former North Side Baptist pastor residing at Conception and Adams reports a Sunday break in. A sneak thief visited Sunday morning stealing two iron banks with dollars and took a purse from his daughter's room.
An auto owned by J. B. Lenoir and a Government street car collided Tuesday at Claiborne and Government streets. No one was hurt. The car sustained front-end damage and was taken out of service.
El Paso reports 22 people died when a northbound passenger train on the National Railway of Mexico struck a spreading rail near Ortiz Chihuahua about 7 miles south of Chihuahua City. Authorities say several others were injured as rescue work began today in Juarez.
In Mobile the city commission canvassed the September 11 1916 election. Harry Pillans incumb ent won fifth year term with 1661 first choice votes to Frank W Crenshaw 1055. Second choice Crenshaw 73 Pillans 62. The board adopted a formal resolution confirming results and listed ward by ward tallies.
Attorney J. W. Tharp returned to Grand Bay Alabama after thirty years and found land value climbs from 25 cents an acre to as high as 200 dollars per acre, a revelation to him during his hometown visit.
J. W. M. Demmer, a professional long distance swimmer, plans to swim Mobile Bay next Friday starting from the Eastern Shore to the city with a launch escort. He believes eight hours of swimming will suffice for the feat, citing prior successes at other points.
The $150000 county school bonds were awarded by the board of revenue and road commissioners to Spitzer, Rorick and Company of Toledo, Ohio. Their premium was 9927.50. Treasurer George E. Stone of the county announced the successful bidder.
Cargo through the Panama Canal in July 1916 approached record levels, totaling 648 957 tons, with July 1915 at 706 469 tons and June at 517 791. British ships dominated the fleet, numbered over American and Japanese vessels, while overall ship counts rose to 149 this July.
In July twelve Atlantic to Pacific ballast ships totaled 38,582 tons while two Pacific to Atlantic ships added 486 tons. South and north traffic totaled fourteen ships. United States government ships included the dredge San Pablo and tug Albert G Force with tolls totaling 460122.99, split as 244428.50 Atlantic to Pacific and 215694.45 Pacific to Atlantic. One coastwide U S ship paid 4462.50 tolls, a navy collier from Honolulu to Norfolk paid none.

Weather Bureau issues storm warnings along the Atlantic coast from Virginia Capes to Jupiter Florida as a disturbance near the Bahamas moves northward. Forecasters expect increasing winds and rough seas over the next thirty six hours.
A city report shows 27 fire alarms answered in August under Chief C H McCosker. Ten tower alarms, fourteen telephone, and two still alarms. total fires caused losses of 25260 dollars with insured 11200 and uninsured 107. No fires spread to adjacent structures.
On motion of Commissioner Schwarz the commission adopted an amendment to the spark catcher ordinance exempting smokestacks 100 feet in height with attached stokers from the law. Mills cotton presses foundries and places using smokestacks must equip spark catchers except dwelling houses. A resolution by Commissioner Pillans sets October 16 at noon for protests by property owners in sidewalk venture 23 on South Ann and South Broad streets.
The Chamber of Commerce announces bids open today for printing a new business directory listing all member firms with names and addresses. The directory will run about sixteen to twenty pages and be published within a short time.
New York authorities report a rise in infantile paralysis cases with 38 new infections in the 24 hours ending at 10 a.m. today up from 22 yesterday. Death toll also climbs by 9 to 18.
The trial of Jef and Richard Harrison of San Antonio and Eugene Dies of Hot Springs opened in MartInaburg West Virginia federal court. They face charges for holding up a train near Central Station last October and stealing nearly 100000 in unsigned treasury notes. Witnesses include several San Antonio residents and Texas associates. The Harrison brothers and Drew were arrested months after the robbery, with the latter reportedly confessing.
Jeff and Richard Harrison and Dick Harrison are named as key figures in Alabama rail robberies over five years. Grady Webb, once cornered in Birmingham, allegedly acted as banker. Jeff Harrison is described as an ex engineer guiding operations. Ben McKee, tied to the Har rrigon group, was arrested in Gadsden last fall. Officials say the group stole over a million dollars from railroads, passengers and U S mail. Webb is still sought and believed to own valuable property in Birmingham.
In Athens on September 11 the French flag was lowered at the French legation amid Greek opinion while French marines stay posted. British envoy declines a guard. Premier Zaimis offered resignation to King Constantine but then withdrew after receiving entente backing.
Interstate Commerce Commission reports July railway net revenues at 93 415 264 for 150 railroads, up from 75 526 039 a year earlier. Total gross revenue climbs to 260 517 824, with expenses at 72 102 569, about 21 million higher than last year.
The Associated Press reports Portland Maine on September 12 that the state election drew the largest vote in history, about 160000 ballots. The figure exceeds all since 1880 when fusion produced 147802. Maine is nominally about 30 000 more Republican.
Receipt of border town votes raises Carl E B Milli ken to a 12,000 to 18,800 lead over Oakley C. Curtis. Indicated Republican plura lities for other candidates are confirmed by revised totals. Republicans will hold solid delegations in both houses of Congress and control both chambers of the state legislature.
From Laredo Texas the Second battalion Second Maine regiment marched sixty miles overland to exercise their franchise. The soldiers voted in line with the home vote and the country result guided the election. City votes gave Governor Curtis a 51 point lead, dramatically down from six thousand two years ago. A 4 to 1 margin approved a state law limiting women's and children's work to fifty four hours per week.
A benefit dance collected a total of 180 dollars for the concert fund. The event featured Vee DeVille entertainment in the Battle House. Chair W Salvage reported the figures at the Chamber of Commerce meeting on Monday night.
