Rome reports a 10 percent increase in Italian railroad freights aimed at boosting government rail revenue by about 3 million dollars annually. The move funds 4 million dollars in extra wages for railroad workers granted after cost of living and war workload complaints. Newspapers urge relief for other workers affected by the war.
Real estate man W K Morrill returned from Pecan Mississippi with a record freshwater catch. He reports seventy five trout caught Sunday and Monday using artificial bait, smallest about one and a quarter pounds and largest four and a quarter pounds. Fish went to Mobile for distribution among friends.
NewYork Sept 8 Chairman Vance McCormick of the Democratic national committee named Charles Boesch enstein national committeeman from Illinois as vice chairman of the bureau of political organizations and clubs with headquarters in Chicago.
E B M Atkins of Selma Alabama and J W Harris of Jacksonville Florida were injured when Atkins auto collided head on with a Government Street street car near Claiborne. Both regained consciousness and are reported not to have serious injuries. Harris lay on the sidewalk thirty feet away. Harris and Atkins were taken to a sanitorium where they recovered consciousness by Friday morning. Deputy Sheriff Harry Murray witnessed the crash and described the head on impact near Claiborne Street.
Motorman D W Moseley in charge of the street car told police that the automobile drove directly in front of the tram as it neared Claiborne street and he had no time to avoid the collision. Fire insurance adjusters Atkins and Harris arrived in Mobile and were staying at the Battle House. The car belonged to Mr Atkins and Atkins declined to comment on Friday.
The Mobile pilots union ratified a harbor board backed agreement to divide duties. Five senior pilots will stay in the city while sixteen others serve in four man squads aboard the pilot boat in the lower bay. Senior pilots named include Sidney A. Dorgan and Thomas Coe. many others will work below.
A special harbor board committee unanimous for temporary acceptance of a pilots agreement. At a later state harbor board meeting a final settlement is expected. The pilot committee includes Sidney A. Dorgan and Donald.
Atlantic City dispatch reports the National American Woman Suffrage Association blocked a resolution to back only candidates pledging support to the Susan B Anthony federal constitutional amendment. The measure, proposed by Mrs. Raymond Robins of Chicago and others, failed by a large margin.
President Wilson left Washington at 1 PM for a stay that may extend past the November election. He plans to speak tonight before the National Woman Suffrage Association in Atlantic City and will spend the night at Shadow Lawn before moving to the summer White House at Long Branch.
Associated Press reports a sharp drop in infantile paralysia cases in New York health figures. New cases total 48, down 13 from yesterday, with 15 deaths, down 13.
Lewiston Maine September 8 Charles E Hughes continued his attack on the Adamson law claiming the country gasped at the abandonment of executive prerogative and congressional duty He said he is a friend of labor only by truth and urged fair minded inquiry into grievances and the bill’s defects in imposing a wage scale.
Up to noon Friday 175 students enrolled at Spring Hill College and were actively in class work. New boys expected this afternoon on all south bound trains reaching the city. Yesterday's arrivals included students from Mexico City Yucatan Cubs Guatemala Philadelphia New York Brooklyn and New Orleans. The junior department has been increased with several new departments.
London reports German troops renewed assaults along the Somme front last night but failed to shift ground south of the river. Fighting between Bierny and Chaulnes was intense with French forces holding positions. Verdun also saw a French counter attack that did not recapture the first German line. British from the Somme were notably inactive with a raid near Guinchy causing severe German losses.
Col J M Bain a Pittsburgh capitalist will address Mobile County farmers at a mass meeting next week to hear endorsement of a proposed Mobile creamery. Evan B Davis of the Gulf Coast Produce Exchange says Bain will learn farmers back the project and will assist in its establishment. Bain arrived in Mobile last night and the group remains ready to pursue the venture.
Bibb county grand jury accuses the Lucille state convict camp of brutal conditions. One inmate with heart trouble reportedly died after daily mine work, another carried on with a broken arm. Convict department to investigate by order of Governor Henderson. Warnings of pardons or paroles for raises of up to $200 cited.
Marie Cook a negro woman wanted in Mobile on violating the Harrison anti-drug act is under arrest in New Orleans. She will be brought to Mobile for a hearing before United States Commissioner Jere Anstill. She is alleged to be an accomplice of Homer Vance, jailed on heroin and narcotic charges, and linked to Sarah Simmons who sent funds to buy heroin. Dr James leaves Mobile for Montgomery Birmingham and Tennessee and will not return until early November.
Battalion Adjutant Roy E. Albright of the Mobile companies on furlough in Mobile says the soldiers are in fine health and eager for duty on the border. Lt A P Reasonover of Company M also visits Mobile on leave from Montgomery.
Scout Master R E Daly Sr announced a Saturday enrollment station for new Boy Scouts of America members. The Vernon of the James K Glencon Company building at Royal and St Francis streets will host sessions from 4 to 4 30 p m each Saturday afternoon.
Clyde Johnson a white man ordered by Recorder Edington to post a 100 bond or ten days in jail refused to leave Mobile and began serving his sentence after failing to make the bond. Johnson a discharged Montgomery soldier had been instructed to stay out of Mobile but did not comply.
German anti aircraft guns forced one Russian biplane to land over Courland where an aerial raid on German positions was repelled and the occupants captured. The official statement says several aeroplanes attacked but achieved no success.
Forecast from Washington notes partly cloudy conditions tonight and Saturday with possible local thundershowers and slightly cooler temperatures on Saturday for Alabama and Mississippi.
The Agriculture Department forecasts August weather reduced corn by 67 million bushels and spring wheat by 43 million bushels, with oats down 43 million and potatoes down 46 million. Tobacco production increases by 27 million pounds while spring wheat is estimated at 156 million bushels. Washington report dated September 8 states the forecast uses September 1 conditions.

Mobile leaders George Fearn Jr of the Mobile Real Estate Board President Edward M Bailey of the Mobile Chamber of Commerce and L D Dix of the Rotary Club left for Montgomery to join Governor Henderson in a statewide conference. Delegates from across Alabama are expected to gather for a push to advance Alabama agriculture and industry with northern capitalists and farmers joining.
A finance sub committee of the Alabama state Democratic committee has adopted plans to raise funds nationwide this fall. E. D. Smith says committees will be named in counties to seek contributions from Democrats and others.
The Ways and Means Committee of the Chamber of Commerce announces a meeting for Monday night at ten o'clock in a hotel. A luncheon will precede the business session.
