Hostile Fleet Attacks Long Island Forts Under Naval Maneuvers
NEW LONDON Conn Oct 18 An attacking fleet of destroyers mine planters and sub mine planters struck the forts at the entrance to Long Island Sound as part of army and navy maneuvers. The outcome and whether troops were landed or the fleet sunk will be known only after the umpires report. Searchlights swept the water as forts answered the bombardment with vigorous fire.

Resolution for reorganization of Newport police

Loss of schooner Tofa reported to her owner here
Captain J M Scott received a Jamaica cablegram detailing the loss of the American schooner Tofa at sea. The hurricane struck on September 24 off east Jamaica. on the 25th the master cut away spars. on the 26th she grounded on a coral reef near Little Cayman Island. Crew and Captain Bodden are bound for Mobile. Captain Scott plans to rename the replacement schooner Daniel Bailey Bluefields NC trade and seeks a further replacement.

Bridge bids rejected for Cedar Creek structure near Mt Vernon

Boiler Explosion Injures One at Hieronymus Saw Mill
A boiler exploded at Hieronymus saw mill at Madison Street around 2 15 pm injuring one man named Joe Petite who was working on a river boom. Workers were warned minutes before the blast and escaped. Petite was taken to the city hospital. Damages estimated at 1000 dollars and investigators probe the cause.
