Congressman Heflin of Alabama predicts cotton will reach $100 per bale before Christmas and cotton seed at $65 a ton as southern growers hold staple. He says mills will buy three-fifths of this year’s crop, leaving 4 million bales for export and munition needs amid high demand for cotton for explosives.
Brooklyn detectives Battelora and Patten tracked a theft at the YMCA gym after smelling covered money. They confronted George S. Lewis, an assistant director, and found a roll of bills tainted with a pungent odor from acid.
In San Francisco on October 16 a free dinner honoring Thomas A. Edison will feature a menu of dots and dashes and after dinner speeches sent by telegraph keys at each guest’s place. 300 operators attend in working clothes, with telegraph poles carrying wires to each table. A phonograph for banquet music and a dictaphone to record Edison’s telegraph sending accompany the event.

In Fort Smith Arkansas twenty five men including former revenue officials face federal court trial Monday on a moonshine conspiracy charge. The case alleges a local distillery shipped whiskey to a Kansas City company where old revenue stamps were affixed and sold retail. About 400 barrels were seized in a raid with an alleged $22 000 revenue loss.
Two bandits shot and killed John F Franks the Pennsylvania railroad ticket agent at Bridgeville Pennsylvania and escaped with the money drawer contents. County detectives rushed from Pittsburgh on a special train. The hold up occurred at 3 oclock Franks age sixty was shot twice. Earlier three automobile bandits robbed Michael Tierney Jr and his clerk at Tierneys Homestead liquor store securing 600 from the cash register and escaping.
In Atlanta on October 16 three girl employees at Mutual Film Company in the Mion building died and three more were fatally injured after a moving picture film and materials explosion. Several others were seriously hurt. two escaped by jumping from windows. Missing are Odessa Erwin and Bessie Eubanks.
Butler County Stock Show and Fair closed in Greenville amid praise for the 1915 fair. President General J. B. Stanley and secretary Duke Guice received commendations for strong leadership. A plan to greatly enlarge the fair in 1916 was announced, with many exhibits to be sent to Mobile for the Gulf Coast Fair.
Miss Maude B. Reeves of the A and M College extension staff judged Wayne Clarke county exhibits in Shubuta praising Clarke and Wayne county canning club girls for high quality. She had earlier assessed canned goods fresh fruit and fancy work at Quitman and found the products as good as any in the state.
London Oct 16 A British fleet attacking a German trawler group in the North Sea destroyed five vessels and captured eight more. Ninety five prisoners were taken, and the raid was announced tonight.
Birmingham dispatch reports a major blaze at the Tennessee Coal Iron and Railroad Company benzol section plant in Fairfield Alabama. Three workers are confirmed dead three are missing and several others burned with damages estimated at at least 100000. Firemen faced danger from exploding benzol tanks after a 42 inch gas main rupture sparked the fire.
H. J. Rogers, president of the state convict board, says convicts can be used to develop coal lands owned by the University of Alabama. After inspecting lands in Jefferson, Walker, and Tuscaloosa counties, he believes two or three mines could operate successfully and will discuss plans with Governor Henderson.
Treasury and Agricultural Department officials will strictly enforce the cotton futures act pending an appeal to the Supreme Court. A New York federal judge had declared it unconstitutional, but enforcement continues until the high court rules.

A Jackson Highway pathfinding committee led by E G Dent and J P Luckett arrived in Meridian at 6 pm from Columbus after leaving Nashville Tuesday. They will depart Sunday morning for Hattiesburg to spend Monday night, praising Mississippi roads as the best seen in four days travel. The party includes W L Crim and W L Brown from Indiana and R E Toms, a government road engineer.
