Reports from Antwerp say 100000 refugees have fled to Holland amid German bombardment threats. Belgium’s government moved to Ostend, and a military proclamation calls men 18 to 32 to join regular troops for the defense.
Wichita Men's Association protested interstate commerce commission rates on black strap molasses shipped from New Orleans and nearby points to restirations in the Middle West. They argued rates are excessive compared with those in Wichita, Kansas, as traffic runs large today.
A war photo from France shows Soissons under German attack with French artillery replying. The image captures a German shell burst over the town and the River Aisne nearby, with Soissons located about 65 miles northeast of Paris.
London reports a near annihilation of an Austrian battalion of Czechs by Russians near Marmaros Sziget as Mogus advance continues. Montenegrin forces push toward Sarajevo capturing Ablak Stepen and Klipjutch with prisoners and ammo. Russian ambassador counters Vienna stating Russians control Bukowina Galicia and parts of Hungary including key passes and towns.
Antwerp reports a morning and afternoon German air attack that destroyed seven houses and killed about twenty. Residents fled to cellars as fear spread, but by evening conditions improved and Belgian forces prepared to defend the city. Ministers seek Ostend routes. Belgian army moves into Antwerp as guards shift to fresh troops.
Citizens of Lee county schedule a mass meeting in Opelika to seek legislation banning cotton planting next year. Captain Reuben F. Kolb, commissioner of agriculture and industries, has been urged to attend and address the meeting and he expresses sympathy and intent to attend.
F. W. Thompson of Chicago, president of the Mortgage Bankers Association, told the first annual convention that America can rebound from European war shocks. He cited vast resources and the capacity to convert 900,000,000 bushels of wheat, 2,700,000,000 bushels of corn, and 000,000 bales of cotton into money to assure forthcoming prosperity.

Joseph Alexander McGowin, a Mobilian former Gulf Coast Military Academy student, and Miss Lillian Culpepper wed in Greensboro Alabama. The marriage was described as runaway, with McGowin’s father unaware his son had left the Gulf Coast Academy. Culpepper visited Mobile relatives and stayed with her sister Mrs L G Adams.
The body of Bjorne Ericson, a sailor who drowned at the foot of Dauphin Street on October 6, was recovered Thursday afternoon at the head of Government Street. He was bathing when seized by a cramp.
Philadelphia report says managers Stallings and Mack argued by phone over Mack protesting Stallings remarks and refusals to discuss interviews. The Boston manager cited newspaper interviews in which Stallings was critical of Mack’s actions.
Information from Aberdeen Mississippi indicates Judge Niles of the Federal district issued a restraining order against the Mississippi Railroad Commission stopping them from forcing six passenger trains back into service. The order is returnable in New Orleans on October 27. An injunction was also issued against Mississippi to prevent collecting a railroad franchise tax.
Senator John H. Bankhead of Alabama urged the Senate to let Southern states issue bonds to buy half of each farmer's cotton at 10 cents a pound and hold it until market normalizes. Bonds would back federal currency up to 90 percent of value. He said conditions are improving and a strong European demand will soon require U.S. cotton.

London dispatch cites Reichspost claiming intense fighting between Bulgarians and Serbians with Istip in peril. If true this signals Bulgaria joining the war on Germany and Austria side, suggesting Bulgarian irregulars attacked northern Servia.
