A Petrograd report says Przemysi fortress west of Lemberg is under heavy Russian bombardment with damage to nearby homes. Austrian forces fail to aid the fort and retreat toward Vietslavsk as Russian action continues in Galicia and Hungary.
George Fleming Moore of Montgomery Alabama was elected sovereign grand commander of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Masons for the Southern jurisdiction by the supreme council in session at Ashington. He succeeds the late Jas D Richardson. Also chosen were Charles E Rosenbaum of Little Rock as lieutenant grand commander and grand prior, Charles F Buck of New Orleans as grand chancellor, Ernest S Hussey of Seattle as grand master of state, and T W Hugo of McAlester as grand master.
The Daily Mail reports a new version of events at the Marne. General Foch, retiring south of Chalons, allegedly found a gap near Vitry le Francois after aeroplane reconnaissance showed two German armies failed to join. He thrust a wedge of troops with heavy artillery, establishing a secure position before German forces realized the lapse, causing panic and retreats with heavy German losses.
Berlin dispatch reports two more forts, Fort Kessel and Fort Brochen near Lierre, captured by German siege guns. Antwerp’s capitulation, German authorities state, is a matter of a couple of days.
Paris dispatch quotes Ancona telegraphs that four Austrian torpedo boats and two destroyers were lost off Dalmatia after striking mines. The report says many crew members perished, with a majority of the ships’ crews killed.
Athens dispatch reports refugees from Premiti in Epirus saying Albanians are pillaging and burning Christian villages in Berat district, about 30 miles northeast of Avlon. The account notes widespread violence against Christian communities amid regional turmoil.

The St. Patrick's Church congregation in New Orleans rejoices as Father Raymond Carra reports he is sailing from Italy and expects to reach New Orleans around mid month. He had left three months ago to visit his birthplace, was detained by Italian authorities at the outbreak of war, and then required to serve in the Italian army despite naturalized American citizenship.
Aboard the Dutch steamer Ryndam from Rotterdam to New York, a ship load of Americans, mostly German born naturalized citizens, arrived. Among them were Karl Muck conductor of the Boston Symphony, Alfred Hertz conductor of the Metropolitan Opera, Otto Roth violinist, Charles Nagel former secretary of commerce and labor, and tenor Enrico Caruso later announced aboard another liner.
German agency reports Japanese forces occupy Yap, the key island in the Caroline group east of the Philippines. Yap lies about a thousand miles from Mindanao. the Caroline Islands, totaling 680 islets, were sold by Spain to Germany in 1899.
London reports a German paper from The Hague says Count Zeppelin is at Wilhelmshaven readying a large air raid on Britain. He reportedly told an interviewer England will be faced soon and may take command of the German air fleet upon return from England. Zeppelin staff work at Wilhelmshaven and Emden.
Survivors from the British steamer Ardmount arrived at Ostend reporting the ship was struck by English mines. The 2240 ton vessel left Galveston on September 5 and reached Falmouth October 4 before being ordered to Antwerp and sunk in a North Sea mine field after a third explosion.
Washington Oct 7 Fatalities in and around quarries in the United States were fewer in 1913 than in 1912 though higher than in Great Britain and France for the same years. 18 men were killed in 1913 from 21 in 1912 with 106,278 employed and a death rate of 3.72 per 1000.

David Kenyon, a young white man linked to local advertising ventures, was arrested Wednesday by City Detective Bureh on a complaint by YMCA Secretary F W Evans. He is charged with obtaining money under false pretenses tied to the distribution of novelty postcard albums placed around Mobile.

He reportedly has obtained reinforcements and is attempting to outflank the British lines while also attacking the French left at Lassigny. Both sides claim limited gains and no decisive result as Russian and Austro German actions unfold elsewhere. Continued fighting and mine dangers shape the northern theater.
Report from the war front claims the German cruiser Cormorant and two gunboats were sunk in Kiau Chau Bay. The Japanese army advances are described as reaching Shan into Chi Nan region along the railway.
