Mobile Carnival Association Sets Stage for 1917 Festivities

The Mobile Carnival Association elected new officers to push Mardi Gras growth on a business footing. President Jacob Reiss, VP Gordon Smith, treasurer M J McDermott, and secretary J Paul Wilson will lead a 28 of 30 directors vote. Next meeting Monday at the Battle House to name committees and plan financing. Confetti may be introduced to widen public participation.

Echo Tug Returns After Twelve Day Voyage From Mobile

The tug Echo under Captain Peter Forbes returned to port late Friday after a perilous twelve day voyage from Mobile to Havana. Heavy seas on the Cuba leg forced Echo to abandon the schooner Edna V Pickels. on the return voyage rough seas and high winds caused further strain as Echo towed the dismasted Stranger back to port. Despite torn boiler braces, the crew weathered the ordeal and remained in good shape.

The Heho and Echo Sail Through Gale on Westward Route

The Heho left Mobile on November 12 with the Pickels bound for Key Francis Cuba. A heavy gale on November 14 forced a change of course as Captain Forbes steered the Pickels to use, with the schooner sailing on to arrive at destination. The Echo stopped at Boca Grande for 24 hours then went to Key West and Havana where the Stranger was towed aboard and the return voyage began. The vessels again met rough seas but finished the trip safely.

Hold Up Men Rob Two Fruit Stores in Mobile

Two armed men, described as negro, robbed cash registers at two fruit stores in Mobile's western district Friday night. Police reported no arrests by Saturday. At 9:55 p m P Kassimi said his store lost $20 and a revolver. at 11:15 Damacus reported a similar robbery but gave no amount. Zeppelin Wreck in Storm Leaves One Survivor

London reports a super Zeppelin wrecked in a Tuesday storm while en route from Friedrichshafen to Wilhelmshaven on its first voyage. Twenty eight aboard perished, only one survivor reached Amsterdam by telegraph. The craft plunged into woods near Maninz after deviating from its course.

Overton case sees wife and daughter testify in defense

Mrs. David D. Overton and Miss Nora Overton testified for the defense in the Madison County circuit court murder trial of Deseton Lawler here.
