Intense interest marked Mobile ballots as 1,500 votes were cast by 2:15 PM with counting expected to be tedious. By 3 PM Mobile appeared solid for six proposed Alabama constitutional amendments, especially the educational amendment, likely to outpoll President Wilson among local voters.
The City Commission disallowed Dr. P. J. Howard’s $780 damage claim after a tree limb fell on his automobile on St. Francis Street near Franklin. The council also referred Adjutant Ira Munselle’s request for free water for the Salvation Army citadel and adopted final sidewalk assessments for district No. 28. An ordinance by Commissioner Lyons opened the 1916-17 tax assessment book for inspection.
With Secretary Lansing absent and officials away from the State Department the United States stance on the steamer Lanao sunk by a submarine off the Rogers coast remains undecided. Patchy reports suggest the ship carried contraband and its crew were transferred before sinking, reducing grounds for a formal protest. The Lanao’s registry transfer was not completed and its ownership shifted toward Norway.
Incomplete returns from 26 precincts in Wichita show Wilson leading Hughes for governor with 1 080 to 808 and Lansdon 723, while Wilson edges Hughes in the Eighth district race and Ayres seeks re election. New Bedford reports a Wilson lead of 1 737 to 1 929 as polls close. Election judges in Wichita City tabulations show varying counts with Wilson ahead in the local tallies.
Polls opened at 8 and closed at 6 as educational amendment drew near unanimous support in Mobile wards. By 2:15 PM about 1506 votes cast across ten wards with counts ranging from 97 to 410 per ward. Sheriff Holcombe noted unprecedented local interest and some staffing gaps in several wards as ballots lengthy with many names faced tallying after closing.
The Mallory line steamer Lampasas sank this morning with about fifty Mobile black laborers aboard en route to eastern cities for work. They waved farewell as they gathered on the forward deck while the ship disappeared downstream.
Mrs M S Boykin, about 70, of 155 St Michael Street, was found dead at 2:30 PM today. Cause given as heart failure. Burial arrangements placed with Roche and Ike. No known relatives locally. a son S Boykin reportedly resides in Alabama City Alabama.
Forecaster notes tonight and Wednesday show little temperature change with fresh east winds along the coast from Kone to the Mississippi. Expect fair to tonight and probably Wednesday with improving conditions.
James A. Wade proposes a diversified eight to twelve acre mix for small farmers in boll weevil conditions. The plan includes corn and velvet beans twelve acres, early cotton twelve, oats six with cowpeas hay, four acres peas and peanuts, four acres pasture, one acre garden and potatoes, one acre cane for syrup, and livestock plus sales from poultry. He argues disciplined farming can meet family expenses without heavy credit and notes six to eight bales of cotton from twelve acres on dry upland.
Police report a Mobile county copper wire gang remains active after the alleged leader was jailed. Southern Bell says thieves stole 100 pounds of wire from its poles during Sunday night.
London reports Lorina A. Lathrop, American consul at Cardiff, telegraphed that the Lanao sunk by a German submarine remained under Philippine registry and flew the American flag. Transfer to the American flag was planned upon arrival in England.
There was no civil session on Tuesday as Judge Henry Chamberlain remains ill at home but improving. Docketed cases are rescheduled to Friday.
The October health report for Mobile shows a total death rate of 16.10 with white deaths at 13.13 and 18 infectious disease cases, 13 deaths from those diseases, and one imported typhoid case. Sanitation work included 1668 inspections and 134 sanitary notices, with water notices, property sewer connections, and anti mosquito efforts ongoing. Meat and milk inspections reached 492 combined, cattle slaughtered 785 yearlings 147 calves 229 hogs 1164 sheep 145 goats 21 total 2491, with 946 pounds of meat condemned or destroyed.
The following persons were arrested for violating the meat ordinance. Joseph Shaffer fined $10, fine paid. A. J. Gayle fined $10.00, fine paid. J. D. Neely case continued to November 6. Public institutions note the city prison was visited regularly with surgical and medical attention rendered as required.
In Missouri a large early vote was reported with about 40,000 ballots cast in St. Louis in the first two hours. One hundred fifty Black residents were arrested on alleged illegal voting grounds as polls closed at five. Republicans claimed the actions aimed to intimidate Black voters amid Democratic challenges questioning voters lists.
Grand Island Neb November 7 R Barton Republican candidate for congress from Nebraska died today of acute pneumonia on election day.
Countess von Bernstorf wife of the German ambassador toured the Deutschland in New London. She toured the ship including the periscope and every compartment while Ambassador von Bernstorff joined briefly. officials denied sending official mail with the vessel though embassy material was later said to be carried. The pair then departed for New York.
Alabama's state building emptied as most officials and employees returned home to vote. Only close counties show contests while Woodrow Wilson is certain to win the presidency and the educational amendment has broad support among state officials and staff.
Clear weather prevails in Arkansas as polls open at 8 a m and run to 6 30 p m with a full vote expected.
Georgia voters, confident of a Democratic majority, speculated on gains for Republicans, Socialists, and Prohibitionists in other states beyond Georgia as polls opened on November 7 1914.
An attorney questioned the charges but refused admission to the jail. Authorities expect more arrests before the polls close.
Reports from Milwaukee and other parts of Wisconsin indicate a heavy vote being polled. The weather is generally overcast.
Louisville and Nashville railroad announces a 10,000,000 order for rolling stock including 5,000 gondolas 18 coaches and baggage cars and eight locomotives. Equipment to be built in Louisville Nashville shops and at New Decatur Ala Pittsburgh Mount Vernon Ill and Jeffersonville Ind plants.
Quille Jones Harvey Brewton and Cc Beckert were fined $2 each by Recorder Edington after testimony they violated city traffic laws by parking autos in the business district. L. J. Rowell and W. O. Schenker faced arraignment for operating cars without licenses and paid $7.59 each.
Vance C. McCormick chairman of the Democratic national committee was the 94th voter in his Harrisburg precinct. He went to the polls with his brother and said he is confident of a Democratic victory and that the country will unite behind the president for the next four years. He planned to return to national headquarters later.
Gordon Smith files suit in the law and equity court seeking 144.50 for alleged damage to his automobile. He claims the defendant P. D. Beville operated a car on September 27, 1916, colliding with and damaging his vehicle on Dauphin and Jackson streets.
Acting Judge Claude Grayson of the city court remanded Pensacola Gomez, charged with burglary, back to jail after his habeas corpus bid. Gomez had secured a ten day hold on bond in the recorder's court before reimprisonment.
In Kansas 62 of 2 474 precincts reporting place Hughes ahead of Wilson with 2697 to 2586. Fort Scott totals from incomplete counts show Hughes leading early in some precincts but Wilson closing the gap. Fort Scott precincts tally 131 for Hughes and 251 for Wilson in the five of nine precincts reported.
Early nationwide returns show candidates Wilson and Hughes leading in several states. In Wichita Kansas precincts report for governor Capper 43 and Lansdon 2 with minor counts tabulated. Kansas City Missouri updates indicate Hughes 378 and Wilson 329 in Wyandotte county nine precinct results.
First Topeka returns from sixteen of thirty two precincts report Hughes leading Wilson 661 to 571. Governor race shows Capper Republican with 606 votes and W. Latson Democrat with 206, aided by a double election board enabling noon disclosure.
Boston November 7 initial returns show five Massachusetts towns reporting presidential ballots with early tallies and party splits. Result details remain incomplete as later precincts are awaited.
Washington November 7 The Pisgah National Forest in western North Carolina is designated a federal game preserve by presidential proclamation. This marks the first federal preserve of its kind east of the Mississippi River.
By 8 o clock after polls opened in Chicago, an estimated one third of the city's registered vote had been cast. The estimate from 650 precincts came by telephone to the board of election commissioners while lines were jammed in dim light. Weather was cloudy and ballots crowded boxes as early voters, including women, began the presidential election rush.
Troops on the border voting today included guardsmen from Minnesota North Dakota Iowa and Wisconsin Their ballots were sealed stamped and sent home to be counted Also guardsmen from South served New York Virginia and Kansas had cast ballots and been sent home to be counted in Dallas Texas on November 1.
