Desolate Plateau Fire Leaves Hundreds Homeless Near Mobile
A Thursday blaze in Plateau three miles north of Mobile destroyed 37 buildings mostly one story frame homes and three stores including Plateau Normal and Industrial Institute. Between 100 and 200 people were left homeless with losses estimated at 25 000 to 40 000 dollars. The fire began at J Gidden’s home, spread rapidly despite bucket brigades, and was checked mainly by a brick Murray store.
