A Rome dispatch relayed by the Daily News states a million Austrian troops concentrate in southern Tyrol and Trentino to deter an Italian attack. Evacuations occur between Sugana and Garda and frontier houses are demolished. Batteries and heavy guns are deployed at about 7,000 feet.
A Greek dispatch reports Turks fortifying Luleburgas 45 miles southeast of Adrianople with an army trained there under German officers. Heavy artillery has been sent from Constantinople to the Durkes district on the Black Sea as part of rear defense for a Bulgarian offensive.
Vienna reports Austrian losses in the Przemysl surrender at six generals about 2,500 officers and 70,000 men. Austria says fortress guns mostly useless and ammo destroyed. Analysts estimate fall opens way for a Russian army of 180,000 in other operations.
London dispatch reports minesweepers alone active in the Dardanelles as storms lessen. A bombardment resumption is expected soon. In Galicia, Przemysl’s fall boosts Russian pressure toward the Carpathians. German forces contest Arras and Champagne fronts but with limited success. Bulgaria’s role in the Near East debate grows as Balkan states await a first move.
Rev R H Long chaplain at the state soldiers home asked the legislative investigation committee for an inquiry into Mountain Creek home affairs. He accused poor management and harsh punishments for soldiers and said medical attention is inadequate. The committee said witnesses from the home would be summoned.
A Cullman circuit court sentenced J. D. Searcy county treasurer and Jo H. Kramer assistant cashier of the German Bank of Cullman to seven years in the state penitentiary. Both gave notices of appeal.
Washington notes show Senator Owen differs from Senator Pomerene, arguing Congress can enact a presidential primary law without amending the constitution. Other items include bread tickets in Vienna aimed for April 11, submarines feared in German fleets, and relief aid totals from Canada to Belgium.

German naval officers reportedly confirm the Karlsruhe lies at the bottom of the sea in the West Indies after striking a reef in December. Sailors and officers were evacuated before a destroyer bombed the cruiser, with the crew watching her go down as the ship’s band played.
The Mobile City and County Tubercular Association gave back a three lot site at Spring Hill for a proposed sanitarium after residents and Spring Hill College officials protested. Mayor Pillans rebuked L C Irvine as voices argued over land handling and health implications. The committee then moved to return the lease to the city.
Police sought two tramps reported robbing the home of Robert Bouchard in St Elmo Alabama on Wednesday afternoon about 2 o clock. They took $65 in currency and two gold watches a man’s and a ladies’ watch. The sheriff’s office was notified and officers were dispatched to the southern end of the county.
Dough Pleasant, released from police custody on a burglary charge, is re arrested by Deputy Mose Bernstein on a Conecuh County warrant signed August 27, 1914 by Judge F J Dean. He is to be taken to Conecuh County to face trial.
The report notes generally fair conditions for Mobile tonight and Friday with moderate shifting winds. Alabama follows with similar fair weather and colder conditions in the north part on Friday. Mississippi is listed as fair tonight.
Rae Tanzer, who sued James W. Panes for $50,000, was held for grand jury on a mail fraud charge. She faced bond renewal at $5,000. Postoffice Inspector Swayne testified Osborne identified at Kens ington Hotel in Plainfield with Tanzer. Osborne denied knowing Tanzer. Tanzer’s sister testified Osborne visited their Bronx home. The bond was renewed and she was released.
Commander Blakely on the cruiser Des Moines reports twenty bales of sisal burned near Merida during recent fighting. A fire also damaged a twine factory outside Merida with part of the building destroyed and machinery damaged. Origin of the fires not stated.
In a Vera Cruz message General Carranza declares abolition of slavery in Yucatan will repay trouble to sisal dealers in the United States. He says slave owners sold or sent slaves abroad to avoid Carranza troops, and notes freed laborers will gain as free citizens while planters face reduced profits.
Arthur Pierce British vice consul at Progreso Mexico departed the country after the Carranza commander declined to guarantee safety for him and his family. Pierce, arriving from Galveston, said he would prepare a full report for his government and would not comment further on Yucatan conditions.
Washington March 25 The Pan American Union reports improving commercial and financial conditions in many Latin American nations with a forward trend overall Exports from New York to Argentina rose February 1 142 901 to 2 049 871 and to Brazil 1 782 656 to 2 018 601 The analysis notes many exported items are manufactured goods previously bought from Britain Germany or France.
Nineteen hundred union plasterers walk out in Chicago protesting workmen who filled their jobs during the strike. The action halts plastering in the area.
Mary Pritchard arrested last December on charges of operating a gaming table at 6 South Conception street. Held under $1,000 bond and indicted by the grand jury, she was the sole defendant tried in city court. After extensive testimony and courtroom arguments by Webb and McAlpine for the defense and Solicitor Clarke for the state, the jury began deliberations at 12:30 and continued into the afternoon.
Mrs J B Lucas wife of a Toulminville painter, apparently committed suicide Thursday morning by drowning in Mile Creek. Coroner G J Flourney investigated noting long standing illness and despondency as factors. Her body was found a half mile from the Davis Avenue bridge.
Consul General Snodgrass reports Moscow has no immediate demand for American cotton and expects shipments to arrive before new orders. Congestion at Archangel and Siberian rails hampers business while taxation on a shipment hindered imports. Cotton cost in Moscow via Vladivostok runs about twenty six cents per pound.
Special to The Item. A. M. Cook, a Hattiesburg jeweler and prominent businessman, fell from a beam above a skylight inside the First National Bank of Commerce on Wednesday afternoon. He died later at the South Mississippi infirmary after suffering multiple injuries including a broken leg and broken bones.
Police received word Wednesday night of an unidentified Black man entering Mrs. J. H. Laughran's 54 South Walkin street home and fleeing with trousers draped over a chair. Laughran pursued the intruder for several blocks but could not catch him.
Joe Washington charged with stealing a goat owned by William Hickman was arraigned in the recorder's court on Wednesday and sentenced to thirty days hard labor. The report notes the animal belonged to a young boy.
The St. Louis American League team completed spring training in Houston and departed for Palestine to play an amateur team today. The second squad left earlier and will reach St. Louis on Friday.
Cotton prices surged to new highs in New Orleans as active futures months climbed 22 to 28 points amid heavy buying. Spot cotton rose 13 points on 8,255 bales traded as powerful interests were said to back the rise and a predicted market reaction did not appear.
Cotton reached the season high with 1,462 bales from the Cummings convict farm selling for about 65000 dollars. The average price was 0.69 per pound. Bids came from Arkansas Tennessee Louisiana and Mississippi. Spot cotton rose 18 points to 8.44 middling on the local market, though activity remained light.
In a U S district court Judge Toulmin presiding the jury found John W Carney not guilty while his co defendant Fred Carney was guilty of illicit distilling. Choctaw county residents were involved. Newt Hand also of Choctaw county was acquitted on a charge of retailing without license.

The Seeberg Steamship company filed incorporation papers in Mobile state court, listing capital stock at 1.5 million dollars and starting with half a million paid in. Incorporators include T. son, H. T., H. F., Burgensy, and B. H. Clingerman. Plans call for purchase of chartered ships to expand freight imports and exports through Mobile ports.
A 1916 telegram from W. J. Bryan to the Chamber of Commerce notes the Progreso situation receiving departmental attention. Instructions are being sent to representatives in Vera Cruz and Progreso as conditions require. Consuls are to request authorities safeguard American commercial interests in Lucatan.

The state military department announces the organization of a new military company at Pell City to be known as Company C, Alabama National Guard. Officers named are Captain Gardner, First Lieutenant James M., and Second Lieutenant Julian 8s., all of Pell City, with mustering into service set for March 20 by Captain Ravee Norris of Birmingham.
Thomas N. Drew was arrested Wednesday afternoon by Sheriff Moses Bernstein on a charge of obtaining money by false pretenses. The complaint states Drew, presenting himself as an agent of the National Life Insurance Company, obtained $1.40 from Red Pease. He was docketed at the jail and bonded for appearance in the inferior criminal court.
The British government denies the United States permission to station an American consular officer at Kirkwall to report on cargo ships detained there. A similar denial affects others seeking information on ships held in the Orkneys for three months.
