March 22 Waco Texas a fire consumed the building housing the Waco Barber Supply Company causing extensive damage. The Waco Morning News office suffered a loss estimated at twenty thousand dollars.
A six hour blaze in Paris Texas last night destroyed about thirty blocks causing an estimated three and a half to five and a half million dollars in damage. Ten thousand people were left homeless with no loss of life reported yet. Fire started in a storage warehouse near the Texas and Pacific tracks and spread rapidly aided by gale winds.
Senate met at noon and Sherman introduced a resolution to authorize the president to call for 50,000 volunteers for Mexican service. Chamberlain moved to raise West Point cadets. Hearings on railway mail pay Porto Rican labor conditions and convict labor products in interstate commerce. House met at 11 a.m. Naval affairs heard armor plate bill. Hay army bill debate continued.
The Verdun fight extends into its fourth week with heavy artillery duels. German west of the Meuse thrusts paused near Avecourt wood as Paris notes violent shelling. Eastern Meuse remains quiet though bombardment continues near Vaux and Damioup. In the Black Sea Russian ships are active and a German steamer Espérance sunk off the Romanian coast.
