Reports say a woman avoided the death penalty as Russian success continued in the east. The Mobile Chamber of Commerce won its opening round in a growth campaign while plans for a Factory a Month program and other progress measures were discussed.
A Reuters dispatch from Teheran reports Russian troops entered Ispahan, the ancient Persian capital, on March 19. The report notes Austrian forces were defeated near Gzsernowitz and trains on the Dniester River area were involved as destroyers clash with German units while Bulgaria prepares the frontier against a potential Roumania threat and the Danube is to be mined.
Governor commutes the death sentences of Ida Ball Warren and Samuel Preston Christy to life imprisonment in the 1912 murder of Warren's husband. Read of their long flight from Texas to Winston-Salem and plans to kill Warren with chloroform and a strangling scheme.
Mobile Whiting Company plant reorganized by new capital to resume operations at once, employing twenty five men with orders ahead. Plans for another factory, Creamery readiness within sixty days. In a one and a half hour session at the Battle House auditorium over 100 members gathered as President E M Bailey led a rapid meeting. A by law amendment on membership classifications was defeated. The printing committee reported ready pamphlets and was thanked. Aubrey Boyles sought a $450 appropriation for a Mobile city and county booklet to attract homeseekers and tourists. The creamery committee aims to close subscriptions in two to three days and proceed with authority. Aubrey Boyles announced the reorganization of the Mobile Whiting Company with outside partners joining local owners Henry D Norris and Martin H Day of Thompson Norris Corrugated Packing.
William J. Bryan opened a Nebraska campaign advocating a state prohibition amendment in Lincoln. Mayor Charles W. Bryan seeks the Democratic governor nomination while Bryan defends Wilson and insists he will be a delegate at large to the St Louis convention. A hotel lobby dispute with John G. Maher over a speaker’s pay sparked tension at the event.
German exchange fell to a new low record on March 21 with demand bills for Berlin at 71 7 16 for four marks, down from the previous low of 71 1 2.
The Nepos, sailing from Progressso, arrives Friday with 7 000 tons of sisal for James Gibboney & Co. of Mobile. The ship discharged the Nepos ch an ae Yucatan for another sisal cargo, signaling ongoing shipments may continue indefinitely.
City Commissioner Harry Pillans stated fatigue signs among female clerks in Mobile shops. The commission adopted a resolution directing the city attorney to investigate the powers to require stools or seats for female employees when not serving customers to rest.
The stern-wheel steamer St. James, mobile owned by Captain Henry M Lindsey, was destroyed by fire in New Orleans at 2 30 am Monday. Insured for 12500 with a total loss of 15000 including contents, the vessel had arrived March 5 for repairs and transfer to Lindsey for the Mobile and Warrior trade. Built Cincinnati 1898 for Merchants and Planters Packet Company, the boat once served as a New Orleans to Donaldsonville packet and later operated excursion trips from St Louis and Pittsburgh.
Berlin dispatch reports Russian air and ground superiority driving Austrian forces from the Dniester bridgehead near Uscieczko after a six month defense. The garrison, under assault by eightfold Russian forces, evacuated at dusk after a seven hour stand and breached by explosions earlier that day. Continued on Page 3.
Charles J. Hardy of Ford Bacon & Davis, Boston and New Orleans, arrived in Mobile to confer with Commissioner Harry Pillans. He will present a final report within the next ten days on the cost and plan for dock improvements to Mobile's waterfront at Arlington.
The first solid flour cargo to leave Mobile departed Tuesday at noon aboard the Norwegian steamer Clathus of the Caribbean and Southern Steamship Company. The 700000 pounds in 50 pound sacks were destined for merchants in Guadeloupe and Martinique, French West Indies, accumulated at St Pauli Louisville Kansas City and Milwaukee.
Mrs. Herzog of Mayersville Miss drowned when the Vicksburg and Greenville packet Ben Hur sank while backing from the Duckport landing in Louisiana. She was 66 and had been in Vicksburg for medical treatment.
Senate resumed debate on the government armor plate plant bill at 11 o clock. The post office committee heard railroad protests against changes to railway mail pay. In the House general debate on the army bill continued and naval committee hearings went forward.
German forces push on toward Malancourt and Avecourt near Verdun with heavy bombardment. Iranian news reports Russian occupation of Isfahan in Persia. Russians win gains in southwestern Galicia as Austrian positions near Czernowitz retreat. Italians renew attack at Tolmino. Irish Sinn Fein rioters clash with police in Tullamore.
One policeman discharged and seven suspended for ten days or five days for neglect of duty. Officers faced accusations from sleeping on post and leaving boats, linked to the Mobile and Ohio depot and various city locations. Major Lyons and Lieutenants Dorson and Lincoln led the investigations with recommendations ranging from ten day suspensions to dismissal.
Mobile reports generally fair and warm tonight and Wednesday with gentle to moderate south and southwest winds. Washington dispatch notes partly cloudy conditions for Alabama and Mississippi with continued warmth and light winds for the period March 21.
Major General Funston asked the war department for more troops to guard a 100 mile line of communications in the pursuit of Villa. No number was given, and no word came from General Pershing. An aerial report from Columbus New Mexico describes a plane crash injuring Lt Bowen and notes several aircraft lost or delayed due to high winds en route to Mexico.
Government troops rout a Villa faction at Trinidad with eighteen killed and sixteen horses captured. The pursuit extends to Jimulco as the force retreats. In Washington Wilson and his cabinet agree to accept Carranza protocol for cooperation against Villa and his outlaws.
Three detachments of General King's force ride hard toward Soute San Antonio with slow reports due to limited signal corps links. General Pershing may not receive notices from those in command until after a delay, easing little anxiety among headquarters in Texas.
