Fifteen thousand buttons will be sold on July 1 in Mobile to raise funds for the Fourth of July celebration. One hundred Mobile women will serve as sales ladies under supervision of Mrs. Kate G. Hagan. R. V. Taylor serves as grand marshal and emblems urging citizens to be American will be worn.
A committee announced buttons will sell for five cents each with no extra cost. Buyers may purchase one or more and inscribed with Be An American July 4 1916 Mobile Ala. Final sale arrangements are at a Home Economics club meeting Thursday at 11 o'clock. officers of women’s organizations in the Preparedness Parade are urged to attend.
Mr R V Taylor was chosen to lead the Preparedness Parade replacing Colonel F M Maddox who declined due to possible redeployment of his unit to the Texas border before July 4. The selection occurred at a meeting of the general committee at 11 this morning in Mayor Lyons office. Committee reports progress and James K Glennon has drawn a division map. The parade would start with city officials followed by county and federal representatives.
The Mobile Lodge B P O E will carry a 350 foot flag from New Orleans after its appearance in New York. Jacob Reiss announces women from the stores division and women’s clubs will march in the parade. Civil War veterans urged to join the Preparedness Parade reporting to Commander Henry Malone or Adjutant Daly. The Red Men of Mobile approve participation and Tu Tribe 59 receives Mayor Lyons's invitation to join the July 4 demo.
Starting Saturday July 1 a limited run presents one famous screen selection at the theater. Nee purchasers receive a fee and the feature promises notable performances.
Officials announced the Alabama and Mississippi Railroad will run trains into Moss Point Mississippi by July 1 with a gala on July 4 at Macy Point to honor the road opening. The line will connect Moss Point with Pasagoula rail routes. An overhead bridge at Evanston Mississippi recently finished allowed the delay to end.
A. S. Williams and C. E. Sibley of Mobile a motorcycle squad member and W. D. Gibson of Auburn collided Tuesday night. Williams was hospitalized and Sibley treated at the regimental infirmary. Officers plan to seek settlement with the automobile owner claiming 25 mph speed.
At the state mobilization grounds Wednesday guardsmen numbering thirty six hundred undergo tests before muster into federal service. Major William L. Little and assistants conduct the examinations, allotting ten minutes per man, totaling twenty five days of continuous work. The War Department directs the medical corps to operate day and night.
The Weather Bureau notes a warm and showery week with temperatures about 1 degree above normal. Some regions saw ample rainfall while others lacked it. Cotton is about a week late. weevils are numerous but farmers continue control efforts. Corn advances, gardens thrive, Phoenix hits 104, Mobile 87, and fair weather is forecast for Mobile tonight and Thursday.
Magnolia Compress and Warehouse Company stockholders met at noon on Wednesday. Officers reported the business was running at full capacity and a new standard compress would operate within two weeks, handling eighty bales per hour. Directors elected: A P Bush, E C Meredith, A L Staples, J T Birm.
The petition of several hundred repair shop employees at Whistler for a semi monthly pay day is with Vice President and General Manager R V Taylor. A final answer from Mr Taylor is expected later this week.
About fifty or more taxpayers appeared before the board of equalizers in a morning session. Karl F. Jenne of St Francis Street challenged a $6,000 assessment on property near Joachim Street but the board upheld the value.
The board plans three o'clock reconvening after noon adjournment to inspect disputed assessments across the city. Turner Supply protested the Sibley property tax, with action postponed to Thursday for on-site review. Reductions granted include Clara Long from 600 to 480, Mrs. Kate A. McKay from 720 to 600, John Hakanson from 2100 to 1800, and Arthur Leverett from 720 to 600 for specified lots and parcels.
A list of valuation cuts approved for multiple properties. A. Cleveland receives reductions on southeast quarter of southwest quarter section 9 and north half of northwest quarter of southwest quarter section 1 with improvements. C. E. Lanham and Belle M Boulet also see lowered totals for houses and lots in Mobile Elmira Dauphin Broad Florida Bay areas. W. A. Seabury properties in Whistler show reduced figures.
Crowd waited to be received by the equalization board Tuesday afternoon, shortening the recess from 1 to 3 p.m. Laboring class received preference in the latter half. Cases disposed include Mrs Mary L Reed with a house and lot reassessed from 1200 to 400 and Mrs C Girod with a house and lot reassessed from 600 to 540. William L McVoy listed for a lot and part of a block in the western area.
Atlanta June 28. The 1915 Georgia legislature faces substantial work with many bills left over from the session. The general assembly will be busy this summer as it reconvenes for days of necessary business and committee work.
British dispatches report continued Italian advances from the Austrian offensive front. Italian forces push along the Asia Ss plateau, seize southern Assia valley positions between Posina and Astica. London notes intensified bombardment on German front in France and Flanders with no major infantry moves yet observed. French defenders north of Verdun repel last night attacks in the Thiaumont and Fleury sectors under General Nivelle.
Washington June 28. The senate urged striking out the million dollar relief appropriations for dependents of enlisted men from the house military drafting resolution. Conferees reported disagreement and the wage committee was directed to renew discussions with house conferees. House action on the disagreement was deferred. Senator Chamberlain pressed to remove all relief references. Army officers seek quick action to authorize relief to speed guardsmen to the border.

Railroads rush extra coaches to Montgomery for the First regiment A N G. Mobile and Ohio lines sent cars from Birmingham district of Louisville and Nashville. Unofficial reports say Alabama troops will move within ten days.
A quarterly meeting of the Gulf Coast Horticultural Society will be held at Irvington on Wednesday. Members will devote the entire day to programs and discussions on horticulture and state topics.
A small docket was disposed of in the inferior criminal court Wednesday. The case of H. Murray for violation of law went over to July 3. Clarence Evans, charged with stealing $7 from Aimee, was held to the city court under a $150 bond.
Orders direct four state guard units from Illinois Kansas Missouri and Wisconsin to move swiftly to Texas and border towns. Illinois First Cavalry and 1st and 2nd Infantry already mustered ready and will entrain immediately to San Antonio Brownsville Eagle Pass Laredo and other mobilization points.
San Antonio officers of the quartermaster department coordinate with border guards as thousands march toward the frontier. Army officials expect no transport delays until converging lines. congestion may rise near the border and routes are being studied to avoid train delays. No clash reported beyond sentry exchanges at Nogales last night.
New York June 28 report that about 14,000 national guard troops from the Department of the East are en route to the Mexican border. Upward of 40,000 more are in state camps awaiting equipment and transportation to be sent soon.
Three special trains totaling forty cars will pass Mobile this week carrying Virginia and Florida troops en route to El Paso Texas. The Second Florida regiment was due in Mobile Wednesday morning but is delayed. Troops will entrain at Jacksonville and travel to Montgomery and Mobile via Atlantic Coast Line and Louisville and Nashville routes.
Yancey Hogan is on trial in city court on Wednesday charged with robbery. Prosecutors say he held up and robbed James W. Crabtree of $1. A special venire selected jurors including John J. Bailey Edward J. Delhounty William T. Leonard James E. Strickland George E. Peppers and others.
Mobile Electric Company will pay employees who join the national guard full pay for three months and full pay minus government pay for the next nine months. The company will keep positions open for absentees while they serve and longer absences will prompt further action.
Mexican chargé d affaires Eliseo Arrendondo delivered a protest to the state department detailing alleged outrages by an American force of about 3 000 near El Valle and La Crusis. The note, citing arrests of 300 civilians and brutal treatment by Apache scouts, accompanies reports of Pershing’s column moving north from Namiquipa toward a possible general assault. The War Department had no word of the incidents.
