Prominent Mobile residents answered Mayor Pat Lyons and Colonel F. M. Maddos to form a mass meeting at city hall to recruit two hundred men for the First Regiment. The event followed a parade by the First Regiment Band and banners urging civilians to aid the war effort.
National Guards are to proceed toward the Mexican border with an official report expected to replace unofficial summaries. Governor Charles Henderson arrives in Mobile this morning as mobile surgeon volunteers offer professional services.
Corporal Victor Chapman of New York and a member of the Franco American corps died near Verdun after engaging a superior German force. He shot down three German planes before being killed by a bullet in the air as his aircraft fell within French lines.
A recruiting assembly is set for 5 p.m. in Bienville Square with a Mobile battalion of the Regiment and all Confederate and G A R veterans invited to appear in uniform. Mayor Lyons will open the meeting, with speakers Judge O J Semmes Captain C E Crosby John C O Connell Commander F E A Carolin and Mrs Rhett Goode among the representatives.
Mayor Lyons announces a city gather at Se Reet ANS to urge enlistment under the Gulf City banner. Military company members will rally at the square and the First Regiment band will play patriotic airs. An open‑air concert is planned after the meeting.
Mayors summons drew city officials and military officers to a planning session led by Mayor Lyons. The federal government announced at Schuylkill Arsenal in Philadelphia that about $1,000,000 in military supplies were ordered for open market purchase. The same amount would be duplicated today and then reduced as 100,000 National Guardsmen are outfitted with blankets uniforms hats gloves underwear and shoes.
A half hundred cases were heard by the Mobile county tax equalization board in a busy Saturday session. Many properties were assessed with reductions granted and hearings to continue next week as numerous attorneys prepare objections.
County records show reduced valuations for multiple properties after Saturday morning sessions. Names include Frank Roberts Ed Cox M E Welch Thomas McCryndle Peter Fry Hannah Fry Lillian Baldwin A A Carolin and Elvina C Burke with property details and lowered amounts from several hundred to a few thousand dollars.
At yesterday’s Board of Equalization meeting the panel noted several homes in suburbs owned by colored residents carried insurance values the board deemed above real value. Adjustments were made for J. J. McHugh represented properties including a Ravannah Street house, a Savannah near Bayou home, a Cedar Street home, and other parcels with reduced assessments reflecting lower values.
Reductions for Mrs Minnie C Richards included house and lot on Government street and Michigan avenue from 10600 to 9600 and Glendale Park lot and improvement from 2000 to 1800. Ella H Lott’s Jefferson street basin home and lot fell from 900 to 720. Dr J B Marshall saw multiple reductions on Elmira Rapier avenue, Carolina avenue, Jefferson and Gatoline Scene areas, with totals dropping from 1800 to 1506 and 2000 to 1750, among others.
Charles Duborow of Philadelphia swam 18 miles from Cape Charles to Cape Henry in eight hours and forty two minutes. It marked the first time the distance was completed.
In Montgomery on June 24 the war department announced that Alabama troops will be ordered from the warfront to the Mexico border. The move is part of broader mobilization plans for border security and potential engagements with Mexican forces.

Charles Nelson, charged with enticement of labor and tampering with crews of Norwegian vessels, appeared before the recorder on Saturday. He demanded a trial. Bond was set at $200 in each case. The complainant Louis Donald, Norwegian consul, accuses Nelson of tampering and obtaining leave for crews and signing them up.
Plans for the Mobile Preparedness Parade on July 4 move forward as Superintendent Murphy calls all Mobile teachers to a Monday meeting. Forty six captains head divisions with five captains over the women’s division, and a notable prize fund is mentioned.
Reports from Whistler and Prichard say over 600 men will line the Louisville and Nashville route from New Orleans to Mobile. Theodore, Grand Bay, St. Elmo, Pula, Ocean Springs, Biloxi, Gul and other towns will send large contingents as five bands are secured with more hoped for. Division captains work to maximize turnout, with trades like jewelers and opticians grouped. Sessions continue until parade night to finalize details of the demonstration.
Superintendent Murphy calls all teachers in public and parochial schools to a 5:30 PM meeting at the high school to discuss plans for the July 4 parade. Miss Metta Thompson, leader of the Prep Parade committee, joins in urging attendance.
Three city lodges Athlesian No. 269 Mobile lodge and Howard Lodge held a joint installation at the Masonic Temple. Officers for Athelstane No. 359 were elected including worshipful master Frank Bigler and others such as Henry L. Gaines Jr. and R. M. Kendrick with R. L. Dousins as secretary.
Trade journal writer Mr. R. G. Booker suggests strong port development prospects in the area. He notes potential growth for shipments and facilities, remarking on existing wharf capacity and future rail connections. Local officials welcome the discussion and plan to study proposed improvements.
Officers expressed growing concern for missing troopers awaiting relief from the Eleventh Infantry. While no new Mexican assault reports were received, anxiety persisted over whether Gomez’s forces had renewed attacks on the injured unit at Ahumada and whether the exposed troops could retreat or evade capture.
At Columbus New Mexico dated June 24 a report from interior arrivals states all American forces in the Carrial engagement have returned to the field base except Captains Boyd and Morey Lieutenant Adair and forty troopers still remaining.
