Seafarers Fined $400 Each for Smuggling Cigars
S Petersen mate of the Norwegian bark Miranda and A Bostrum steward of the Norwegian steamer Fjell were fined $400 each by Collector H Gordon Ashley for attempting to smuggle 500 cigars ashore Monday night. The cigars were confiscated and the men, held since Tuesday, faced a hearing before the collector. The fines were officially set on Wednesday afternoon with payment anticipated.
