Carnival directors in Mobile plan a $25 000 budget for Mardi Gras and will form district committees to solicit gifts by next Tuesday January 9. President Jacob Reiss will appoint thirty chairmen to lead district drives amid a citywide effort to raise funds and avert debts.
Wheat prices surged sharply as May futures rose to about 1.86 5 8 a bushel amid persistent buying by speculators. The market ended on a strong note with a 6 3 8 to 6 3 4 cent gain and May near 1.86 5 8, reflecting optimism over potential supply improvements and rail moves east.
Detective W. V. Pearson reports recovering the automobile of Mr John Jane stolen from in front of Battle House and a second vehicle owned by Mr G. Erger found in a swamp in the western part. Police continue to pursue a lead expected to solve the case.
Dr A B Horn head consul of the Woodmen of the World for Alabama will visit Maple Camp as honored guest at Wednesday night’s officer installation. He lives in Union Springs and is a prominent state figure who will become junior past consul at the 1917 Dothan convention.

The weather man predicts rain for Thursday with continued warm temperatures in Mobile and across Alabama and Mississippi. A central low pressure area over the lake region brings clouds and mild heat, while much of the West reports warm conditions and occasional cold spots among mountains.

The secret service announced a new counterfeit ten dollar gold certificate of the 1917 series. It bears the letter A and plate No 9, printed on two pieces of paper with no silk threads. The printing is poorly done.
