Police clash with protesters after a mass meeting calling to impeach the cabinet over graft charges. Fifteen people were pushed into a canal. arrests followed as crowds attacked government offices and entered near the Diet. The Diet rejected the confidence vote 205 to 164.
Federal Judge H T Toulmin heard arguments Tuesday in two peonage cases United States vs Reynolds and Ughton. The defense contends prisoners’ fines and labor terms complied with rights while the government argues contract terms and surety obligations affect the prisoners. Proceedings continue with a decision to follow.
Prof D O McGovney dean of Tulane University arrives in Montgomery to study bar admission standards and exam methods for Carnegie Foundation. He will observe the semi annual applicant examinations and review supreme court admission practices. Previous investigations covered Minnesota Florida and Mississippi this assignment covers Alabama.
Mobile city commission votes 2 to 1 against Commissioner Schwarzs proposal to issue bonds for an auditorium and library on Spring Hill and Wilkinson. Mayor Lyons and Commissioner Pillans decry the plan citing debt limits and better uses, while Schwarz defends the mixed project and library emphasis.
Newton Mississippi man prints a Berkshire hog weighing five hundred pounds at fifteen months to show breeding benefits. He advocates a Mobile packing house to move twenty to forty carloads daily, creating employment and stabilizing markets. Central Committee members M. J. McDermott E. J. Jackson Mississippi February 10 Somewhat discouraged but not dismayed the state suffragists say they will renew their effort at the next legislative session to win suffrage. Belle Kearney a leading figure says the next campaign should seek statutory suffrage aligned with Illinois. She differed on pursuing constitutional suffrage this session and the outcome at least partly vindicated her view.
Franklin P. Jarvis paymaster for Sloss Sheffield Steel and Iron Company was killed in an elevator accident at the American Trust Building. The door reportedly not fully closed as the elevator moved from the ground floor, Jarvis struck the enclosure and fell to the lobby and basement. Revenue agents destroyed two illicit stills near Huntsville in Jackson County.
Hubert Genter, accused of fatally shooting his wife through a window at her uncle James Smith’s home near Rhea Springs, was captured at Emory Gap after three days on the run. Smith was wounded in the pursuit. Genter, a Chattanooga resident, had fled after learning his wife had not married legally divorced from a former husband.
The Alabama Supreme Court affirmed the ejectment case Moore et al v Boyle appealed from Mobile law and equity court. The suit sought to recover land on the south side of Churep in Mobile. The lower court had given the affirmative charge for the defendant.
Dr. William H. Gates state prison inspector submits to Governor O Neal a report on the Mobile county jail and alms house. He finds them in fair condition with minor issues including need for blankets bed clothing and some whitewashing in the alms house.
The twelfth paving venture was amended at Tuesday's meeting to limit work to Spring Hill shell road from Broad to Hallett, excluding areas west of Congress, Adams, and other streets. The board disposed of routine matters and adjourned.
A regimental court martial for the First Infantry will convene at the Mobile armory hall on February 18 at 8:00 p m. Privates Henry Oswald Harvey Delphy Mitchell Bullock and John Hayes face charges of failing to attend muster and loss of military property. The court is led by Lieutenant Colonel F M Maddox and Captains Leon Schwarz and Julius A Smith.
At noon session the immigration committee postponed Burnett bill action while approving a fish culture stations measure for Minnesota and Louisiana. House hearings continued on trust issues and the Shackleford 25 million dollar good roads bill resumed consideration before committees.
John C. O Connell editor of the Mobile Item is appointed by Governor O Neal to the Mobile River Commission to fill the vacancy caused by Horace Turner. The commission includes the mayor and heads of city and county administrations with one state representative.
Ex Mrs. Howard, 40, marries the partner described as the companion of her son Le Huey in an apparent high profile wedding. Details on the identities and subsequent family implications remain sparse in the report.
Mrs Mary Scott Hartje widow of a Pittsburgh millionaire reportedly married Sta ley Howard in Redlands California, more than a week ago. Howard is 20, Mrs Hartje 40, and their son Scott Hartje is 18. The sensational case that began in Pittsburgh was a notable early 20th century scandal.
B B Comer spoke in Jasper Alabama to over 300 listeners at the courthouse, finishing in about ninety minutes then filling time with stories. He attacked Frank Glass and the Montgomery Advertiser accusing them of railroad funding and urged voters to elect him governor while supporting Chase Henderson on the Railroad Commission. He compared his past governorship to President Wilson and claimed to represent the will of the people against liquor interests. Wallace was cut off for time as the crowd dispersed.
Former Crenshaw county tax collector T. R. Bryant owes 2003.40 for incomplete settlements in 1911 and 1912, per Examiner G. F. Ledberry’s report filed with Judge A. Gamble and submitted to the governor. The Crenshaw books were found correct, and Probate Judge J. E. Camp of Talladega county also reported in good shape.
District Attorney in Gham Alabama filed suit alleging Southern Railway kept employees on duty for over sixteen hours in two incidents. The cases date from April 23 1913 between Columbus Mississippi and Birmingham and May 2 1913 between Sheffield Alabama and Birmingham with $6 000 in penalties sought.
Mr I Dahlheimer the Dauphin street jeweler who underwent liver trouble surgery last Sunday was Tuesday reported slightly improved and holding his own though still very serious. He remains at his home on Georgia avenue.
Army transports Hangock and Prairie at Culebra with 1,750 marines ordered to Pensacola. Hangock will sail to New Orleans later this month for Mardi Gras and Prairie to Mobile for the same occasion, then after Mardi Gras the Prairie is to carry 200 men to Mexican waters.
Fletcher Morton 24 year old keeper at the state hospital for nervous diseases in Little Rock was stabbed to death by a 68 year old patient who claimed Morton had threatened to kill him. The weapon was a glass dagger.
In Minneapolis on February 10, 24 year old David Wredberg was knocked unconscious by robbers and cast over a bridge railing into the Mississippi River ice sixty feet below. He was pulled to safety with a lasso after four hours at the hospital he regained consciousness and recounted the events.
Mobile real estate firm Glennon & Co says they were not involved in pressuring the city to buy the triangle at Washington avenue and 3rd street for a park. A letter to Mayor Lyons from the firm was read at the city commission meeting explaining their noninvolvement and clarifying the firm’s position amid a Publish’s critique.
